1. If he decides not to buy, you've got to transfer funds to him. Paying a fee to do so.

2. I'm just a little dubious of this 'when the banks are closed' thing. If he did happen to have access to someone else's account, then this can be reversed on the Monday. You won't be able to access the funds until it is confirmed by the bank ('has value') and only then then is it irreversible. He's then had your vehicle for 50% of the price, and is long gone.

I suppose it depends on trust. Is he willing to provide you with driver's licence, passport, utility bills, payslips ... all for you to photocopy, not him providing copies. If so, then it becomes more trustworthy. If not, then less so.

No matter what I or anyone else says though, it's down to you, and how much you feel you can trust the person concerned.

He is making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be and it is in that complication that things get funny and start going to south.

As robjp says, it comes down to trust but, in my books he has done nothing to earn that trust.

I would suggest that he brings the balance in cash on Sunday. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

I have a limited company and it makes no difference whether he draws the money out as cash or makes payment electronically, it would allocated in his books as purchase of a vehicle (or dividends or whatever).

Offer to give him a receipt that confirms amount, reason and vehicle details. he can use that as the source document for his accounts. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

Now it's sounding even more dodgy - putting vehicles through limited companies with tax rules the way they are is usually not economic.....

Greenblood is right, it doesn't make a diff in the company books whether its electronic or cash payment 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

+1

Taking cash out is absolutely no different to electronic transfer or writing a cheque in business terms - except maybe a day or 2 to clear.

I'd be tempted to suggest as an option that you go to him on Monday and go to a bank of his convenience just to see what he says - if he's straight, he will jump at it - if he's dodgy the excuses will flow......

Got to agree with Joker. This is getting more and more dodgy.

We might all be wrong. He might be legit. But it just doesn't ring true.

Out of interest, what is the company name ? My plan was idiot-proof ...

Until someone designed a better idiot

Get the company name and check them out at companies house this will tell you who the directors are possibley there address and registered address (though this can be given as there lawyers or accountants) will also tell you if they have filed there last years accounts.
If he is legit he will have no problem giving you all the info you need.
Have used cash to buy vans before so doesn't mater if a business pays cash, cheque, bankers draft or bank transfer.

Last time I sold a car and got cash 9k checked it all then found out he had given me a couple of Isle of Man £50 (accepted at the bank no probs) notes could be handy this weekend off to the TT for a couple of days. Gone

This was probably a genuine sale that's being hyped up to red alert via paranoia. Ok you need to be 100% on the ball otherwise you could be stung but lets get things a bit more realistic, you want to sell your car for a good price and unless you trade it in or sell it at half it's value to "we buy any car" you will be in the same situation with anyone you deal with. Surely a scammer would have got cold feet by now purely because of your persistent questioning resulting in them moving on to another victim.

In short the car stays with you until any funds are cleared, it should be same day speak to your bank, to cover yourself photocopy his driving license too.

The way I'd do it because if value

1) take a deposit of £100 via PayPal to ensure he actually turns up to view.
2) if its agreed to buy, visit the bank using car as transport, get a bankers draught there and then and complete V5.
3) visit your bank and pay bankers cheque into your account.
4) handover V5 and keys.
5) pat yourself on the back

The problem is that the buyer initially wanted to come up on the Saturday, but has now moved it to the Sunday. No banks are open. Bank transfers are NEVER complete until verified by the bank, and that will only happens in opening hours. If the buyer is dodgy, then the vendor can be left with nothing.

It isn't paranoia, it's taking reasonable precautions to protect yourself.
Buying a car through a Ltd Co. makes a lot less sense these days. If I was buying a car to use for business use, I'd probably buy it personally, and charge all my mileage at full HMRC rates. If the company owns it, you normally end up with an additional personal tax bill, and HMRC tend to scrutinise it for personal mileage (charged at even higher rates) if you only put it down for business use. Been there, done it.
