2003 Range Rover SE Td6 Epsom Green
Droning noise like cooler fan when stopped in 'drive'

Any ideas why my 2003 TD6 vibrates like the engine fan has cut in when I come to a standstill in 'D' but the noise and vibration stop if I put it into neutral? Symptom disappears as soon as I pull away. Seems to start once the car has warmed up.

This is normal, it even states in the manual not to leave the car in D for long periods of being stationary.
It's the torque converter, the fluid is still being driven around by the vanes on the impeller and turbine, they free load themselves I believe when in this state however its not the same as being in neutral as the car still needs to move once you release the brake, so really its like half loaded first gear. if you notice when you select N the engine revs drop and the car sounds like its not struggling any more. You wont really damage the gearbox by leaving it in gear for short periods, however you will use more fuel by doing so plus putting it into N will allow the gearbox to cool down a little more. There are many threads on this site already about which is best D/N/P but really its your choice... Bushy

More modern cars actually select N automatically when stationary without you knowing because of this permanent loaded state, it's all very clever and beyond my understanding, but I believe the main reason is like I stated above you'll use more fuel if you leave it in gear as the car will always be trying to pull forward slightly. So in a aim to ever increase MPG new boxes do this auto-switch. Bushy

Just responding to PaulB question, it has 22" wheels fitted but I'm wanting to sell these and return to 18"

I noticed a difference in vibration at standstill when I switched from 18 to 20's.

I still have the 20's on, because they look so much better IMO. Thumbs Up

But I also have the car wanting to pull when in D.

Yep I often get a vibration drone too on my td6 with 20s on (varies a lot with tyre pressures), when in traffic I always flip the gear to N.

It is normal and the reason why TD6s were never offered with 20s originally.

Another odd noise is the viscous fan that sounds like a fan (London bus/lorry) woosh at lower revs. Its another very common issue that is nothing to worry about. Either high rev it, remove the fan, or replace it. Tom
