Dealer or Independant

I have a service looming at 48,000 Miles on my ’57 Plate TDV8

Been quoted c.£580 by my local main dealer for an Inspection Service which seems slightly high to me and yet to look at independents for a cost comparison. Car is still under the Select LR Warranty until Novemeber although I believe as long as LR parts are used that should be unaffected.

I currently intend to take it to a main dealer for this one unless anyone can convince me differently. Maybe a question for Gary, how much difference in value from a FLRSH to a independent history ? 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

Hi, Not a lot in terms of value but quite a bit in terms of saleability!

I love cars that are full main dealer service history simply because they are easier to sell.

Having said that I am convinced that cars serviced by independents for part of their record have suffered zero ill effects and are as good as any main dealer car.

Its all in the perception at point of sale Thumbs Up

In fairness if you had still had that XKR I suspect I would not be servicing the FF at all Razz 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

I am sure it did, it looked pretty good to me and I do have a hankering.

Have to admit that while I do love the Rangie, I do miss the sound of a petrol V8.

I suspect I am still financially too much into the car to realistically change for a while. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

Re: Dealer or Independant

We recently had a Q7 with a LR 'approved' and later a LR 'select' warranty (long story). IMO the LR warranties are amongst the best on the market.

Last year, did some research and got the Q7 major serviced at a recommended Independent Audi Specialist (it was hundreds of pounds cheaper than using the main dealer). Told the Specialist wanted only Audi parts used etc but could not tell you if they did as asked.

A few months after the service, took the car to Kwik Fit for 4 new tyres. After driving 10 miles home the air suspension exploded (a query arose as to whether jacking mode had been used when changing the tyres). The Q7 was recovered to the Audi main dealer and the £2200 repair bill was covered without quibble and via the LR Select Warranty.

Sold the Q7 privately a couple of months after that for approx £3k 'over book price' (it had all except the 'final service' done by the main dealer).

Just a previous owner's experience for you.

Thumbs Up

Is there a standard menu price approach to servicing on a per year basis as the Service reception at the dealer mentioned a 7 Year service, which I have never noticed anyone using that kind of terminology on here. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

They didn't say which slightly confused me and I only clicked on after the call finished. Will check tomorrow with them. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

Inspection 2 (major service) inc Brake and Coolant change quoted £449 at Stratstone LR, Stockton.
I appreciate I don't know where you are in UK and price was just as a comparison on my 2007 TDV8.
Is there another main dealer close?
Maybe get them to compete for your money and retain main dealer stamps.

Might be worth checking if your transfer box fluid has been changed, it's recommended at 5 yr intervals, mine hadn't been done. Holds about 5 litres of fluid iirc.

That certainly sounds cheaper. How do we know the requirement for Inspection 1 or Inspection 2.... The car only says Inspection. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

Not sure on that one, sorry. Mine was at 75k and had never had Inspection 2 prior.
The service history only had Inspection 1's and Oil Service's recorded.

It was Brake 'fluid' and coolant change, sorry for any confusion.

On these engines, isn't there a big cambelt change at 7 yr / 105k miles, like on the Sport and the Jags ?

Also, regarding servicing outside LR dealers (from http://www.usedvehicles.landrover.co.uk/approved-warranty )

Servicing Requirements

It is a condition of the Warranty that your vehicle is serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. Throughout the warranty period a franchised Land Rover dealer or a VAT registered garage should carry out all servicing and repair work. Services must be carried out within 500 miles/one month of the intervals specified by the vehicle manufacturer, whichever comes first.

Tsk!!
The 3.6 tdv8 had a timing chain.
The accessory belt might want looking at though and don't forget to check the bleed nipples afterwards to make sure fluids were actually changed... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
