Help! Being taken for a ride! Insurance/bodyshop

Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice here.

Accidentally managed to reverse into my neighbour's BMW 1 Series the other day - was a very light impact and wasn't in the FF (Phew!) but there is a 4 inch scratch (fairly deep) just below the fuel cap on the rear right wing. The car is relatively new (2011 model) and my neighbour tells me that he has to have this done at a BMW body shop as otherwise it will invalidate his warranty (he has a 5yr warranty apparently).

Now the amazing thing is that the BMW guys have come back with a quote of £1100 quid for this!!!! Looking at the quote it appears to include the removal of the rear bumper, the tailgage gasket, the right sill rail, the rear side window glass!, the right roof rail, the right drip rail moulding and then finally the repair to the side panel.

Labour - 500
Paint/Material 275
Parts - 55

Am in a quandrary - Don't want to go through insurance as will just hike my premium's up and its neighbour so can't really throw a strop but this seems ridiculous!

Is it true that a minor body work at an independent would invalidate the BMW warranty?

Thoughts? African Bush Junkie ... in London!

I suppose if the repair isn't BMW approved then it will invalidate his paintwork warranty. Si. <This is my name.

Is it not the same as service work? As long as it is done to standard, the warranty will be ok? Previously..

the £1100 is an insurance quote, you could possibly get it cheaper if you paid cash.. ... - .- -.

THis is what it says on the BMW Warranty page Paintwork Warranty

The paintwork warranty covers your vehicle against defects such as blistering, discolouration or staining of the visible surface of all painted body panels occurring as a result of faulty manufacture or workmanship for a period of 36 months from the date of first registration without any mileage limitation.
All paintwork repaired under warranty must be carried out by a BMW Approved Bodyshop.
Although modern paints are durable and resistant to many external hazards, they cannot reasonably be expected to be totally resistant to all. You should therefore take particular care with your paintwork if you live in or near an area where industrial fallout is prevalent. Please read the relevant section in your handbook on paintwork for more details.
Bird lime can have an extremely corrosive effect on your paintwork and should be removed as quickly as possible.
Since damage caused by industrial fallout or bird lime is not a fault of manufacture, this cannot be claimed under warranty.

The only other one that may apply is the anti-corrosion Warranty
That however provides that:

Claims cannot be accepted for perforation that occurs as a result of unrepaired or improperly repaired paint or body damage.
Vehicles which undergo major accident repair work during their anti corrosion warranty period are still covered by the warranty provided:
a. The correct BMW corrosion prevention methods are used.
b. The repair work is carried out by a competent repairer to BMW repair standards.

Whether or not he is comfortable with an independent is his prerogative I guess.

What gets my goat is that the Dealer are probably not even going to go through all the steps they have quoted for ...

They have quoted: 6.25 hours of mechanical labour and 7.6 hours of paintwork labour including 3 hours of preparation for pre painting? Why would the roof and rear bumper have to be repainted when there is no damage there whatsoever? African Bush Junkie ... in London!

And dont forget the cash price as well as some are happy to do that Smile

If you run your own company you could always put it through the books to avoid the VAT part.

It sounds about right for rear quarter damage from a dealer as i had something similar to a nearly new auris a few years back and that was £1400 for that damage Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Neighbours Polo got a bash in a car park and the offender Censored off, damage to n/s rear door, the neighbour was left with a repair bill was £900 so £1100 for a BMW doesn't sound out of the way.

No doubt an independent body shop could do it for about half of that, but try convincing your neighbour Big Cry

Not sure it helps but I had my FF repaired at the back end of last year at national repair centre. There work was covered by a 10year warrenty. Most garages would give a warrenty on their work. So if you got it done at a decent repairer your neighbour would still be covered by a body warrenty. Thumbs Up [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Update

So this is the damage - The BMW guys have come down to £780 which is still quite a bit for the damage (see pic).

Question now is do I do this through my insurance (I have 7 yrs No Claims protected) or should I settle it privately? How much is this going to impact on my premiums - risk with going through Insurance is that he will then demand a courtesy car and that will drive the costs up even higher.

A bit miffed with the chap as a very good garage up the road (BMW independent) has quoted 350 but he is insisting that it goes to a BMW bodyshop so as not to invalidate his warranty.

now this begs the question that do you legally have to go through your car insurance or as long as you pay for the repair will that be ok..if the latter then as long as the repair is done properly then chappy cant insist on a bmw repair shop.. ... - .- -.

Perhaps he can't insist, but if its pushed too far the risk is the other party simply informs their insurance company the vehicle has been hit, takes it to BMW for the repair and then leaves it up the the insurance companies to sort out between themselves

Cant see that being cheaper....

FWIW SWIMBO scraped her car on a post a couple of years ago - cost was £650 to repair and the insurance companies (we shopped around at renewal) recovered about circa £800 from her in increased premiums over the next 3 years before they dropped back to their previous level.... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

To be honest i think at that price take the hit.

Pay it in Cash up front and draw up a quick letter saying that the matter was settled without insurance involvement and that they are agreeing that you pay for the damage (XXX amount) to XXX body-shop to perform the repair.

Once signed then pay the body shop straight up on a credit card if possible(and then pay off the outstanding balance asap) as it will get you some extra protection should you ever need it but the above letter signed by said neighbour will help legally protect you.

If it was me once they had signed the letter I would just drop into convo that a recent RR repait that was really light bodywork cost £11000 on a 7year old RR from a light shunt so just be careful around your car as it has cameras inside always recording... That should put the Censored up them for screwing about..

Also the BMW bodyshop will only offer a 12MONTH warranty on the work, and BMW should anything happen in that area and they find out its been repaired, after the 12months above, is out, will then refuse the claim saying that the bodyshop work wasnt up to standard anyway.... They will deny this but they will use such wording to wriggle out of a future claim anyway... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Thanks guys,

Agree am just going to take the hit on this one. Doesn't make sense to pass it through the insurance.

Don't think he will try anything with the ffrr - On the positive side he has stopped parking his cars outside my gate now Wink African Bush Junkie ... in London!
