Isn't this supermarket fuel cheaper because it's missing additives that lubricate the engine and give better MPG?

dont think so..its like buying milk from asda and waitrose, same stuff but different price..

if supermarket petrol/diesel was inferior to shell/bp etc then millions of car engines would be knackered by now.. ... - .- -.

It's a contentious issue and, has been proven above, causes staunchly opposing views.

My view is that I won't use supermarket fuel unless I absolutely have to. Sure, it meets the minimum fuel standards but I trily believe that the 'premium' brands have other additives that help. OK, so the cheap stuff won't ruin an engine as that would be blatantly unfit for purpose, but the likes of Shell, BP, etc add a few extra additives to improve long-term emissions, economy and smoothness.

Agreed, every engine is different and so are peoples perceptions. The differences may often be small and relatively unoticeable. Then again, I've known huge differences.

My own preference is for Shell. Like many places, I have a loyalty card and get decent-ish reductions every month on fuel.I know where the stations are which are plentiful where I live and work and I really don't look at prices. Si. <This is my name.

My uncle (now retired) was a fuel scientist for Shell - I'm only stating what he's told me.
"You get what you pay for"
I won't go into the "ins & outs" of it, but his lot spent a considerable amount of time, effort and research into additives that go into their fuel. They ran various cars as their own on different blends then stripped the engines to see the effects.
He sounded pretty convincing !

I only run SHELL in my cars unless I have to splash & dash elsewhere.

Helps when you have a SHELL CARD for payment by monthly invoice/dd

Many of the large fuel companies have cross-company agreements to supply their 'regular' fuels to one another. For example, I know of a Shell garage that was frequently supplied with either Texaco or BP fuels for the 'regular' grade (the additives were Texacos/BPs respectively). Only the premium (e,g, Optimax) variants were Shell. This works the other way around too, so being loyal to one retailer does not guarantee you are getting their product.

Speaking as a chemist (the test-tube and bunsen burner type, not the pharmacy type), I have no concerns whatsoever in using supermarket fuels; many of these have performance improving additives and those that do not will not have a detrimental effect on your engine. Also, I would not dream of wasting money on aftermarket additives.

I used to work near a fuel depot near Langley. Most of the fuel comes from the same place, same as windscreens one gets branded with the car manufacturers stamp the others don't. They all arrive in the same place. Personally think the debate is bulls&&t
