Severe brake judder after disc skim....

So, here's the story.

New discs n pads put on November last year after what was believed to be a "warped disc", couple of months of trouble free motoring then started to notice a slight brake judder again. Progressively got worse until end of march when I booked the car in to have a Hunters alignment and brake check with the potential to skim them if the was an issue found. Hunter alignment done, nothing major out but few tweaks required and a "compression" on the disc potentially from sitting on the brakes when they were hot. However, the skim couldn't be done then because the machine wouldn't fit with the discs on the car so had to rebook in to get them done off the car.

So, hunter alignment done, which actually seemed to improve things by about 75% but it still wasn't perfect so went ahead with the skim on Saturday morning - decided on the skim as opposed to new because the fact they said only 0.005" needed to come off and they were not that old. Anyway, skim done Saturday morning and when I drove the car away it was horrific!!! Brake pulsing at slow speeds, got up to 50-60mph and even with the slightest braking the whole front end of the car shakes - kind of feels like I'm driving over a very cobbled street at 50mph. I actually struggled to control the car when braking at speeds of 45-65mph so turned round and went back as it just didn't feel safe.

"Senior" technician took the car out and confirmed the judder and suggested as piece of mind that the car was safe, he'd take the brakes off again and check all was well. He took it out again and no better. They're now saying they had to take so much off the discs to get them level that the only option now is to replace the discs and ultimately the pads. I'm having a mechanic mate of mine run. DTI over them tomorrow to confirm if they're true or not before I speak with their manager who wasn't in on Saturday.

Not sure if anyone can confirm whether or not this is actually a disc issue (seems highly likely as that's all that's changed) but what I'm not sure of is, if the discs are in fact straight n true, will replacing them actually have any effect???? Or is it a case that they Censored 'd the discs? Or damaged the hub?

At the moment I've essentially spent £75 on alignment and £90 on skimming and made the car 100000 times worse, almost to the point where it's undrivable and potentially now having to she'll out £270ish for new discs n pads to fix an issue I believe they've caused.......

Just to add, general driving at all speeds seems fine but I have noticed a slight "rubbing" (not quite a scrape) when turning right. This may have been there for a while and never noticed or listened for it until having this issue - may or may not be relevant....?

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi sorry to hear about your unfortunate problem with your car ? couple of questions if I may in reference to the work carried out by your garage ?

1) were the brake disc's skimmed on a lathe of the car ?
2) was there a run out check performed before the brake disc's were touched ?

I'm a mechanic who works in a family garage with my father in blackpool, my dad had the same problem on his S type R jaguar which had 330mm disc at a price of £290 from the stealer after 6 months the car did exactly the same with brake judder and run out ? which couldn't be possible you would expect right ? coinsidently within a this period a company rang us calling to offer a demo on there brake disc skimming machine which was on car lathe??? this is called a pro cut machine and is widely used in America by 80 per cent of the stealers.

He demo'd the machine and had a run out on each disc of around 20 thou ? serious brake run out, He then recut the brake disc's to within 10 thou and with new brake pads fitted asked us to test drive the car. Was 100 perfect. My advice to you is to find someone with the machine local to you and get them to cut the disc's on the car ??? any problems pm me will help as much as I can

Just buy new discs... You know it needs done.
Here is an example and you get 25% extra off these prices as well

I think removing even more material from a worn disc is not a great idea to start with tbh. Previously..

the problem is if there is a run out from the hub its self, slight wheel bearing play the symptom's will come back again in a small amount of time and mileage ?

there is a minimum thickness a disc can be for obvious reasons therefore from my experience of 12 yrs and 2 with the brake machine I would skim the disc's even if you put new ones on and trued them up to the hub too ?
