Reg transfer to retention

Does anyone know the order which all the documents arrive when transferring a personal plate?

I'm in the process of buying a car which has a personal plate and the seller is retaining. The new V5 has arrived with the original number plate and he also has a retention with his personal plate but the tax disc and MOT haven't come back.

Where do the MOT and tax disc come from? I thought there were issued by the local DVLA office and you could take the V5 along and they do it while you wait or am I wrong?

Also does anyone know how long this process usually takes as thus far the V5 has taken 3 weeks to come back.

In our experience, 4-6 weeks.

We had exactly the same scenario as you a few years ago. Bloody frustrating. Si. <This is my name.

You can do it by post, and it takes a while,

Doing it the other way round and putting the plate on, which i did, was over the counter at the nottingham dvla office, gave me a replacement tax and mot at the same time. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

But could the car be driven away with the personal plate still on the car ( the seller has the retention with the number on) and then when the documentation comes through he posts me the MOT and tax disc then I put on the original number plate?

So I wouldn't get stopped by the law with his personal number, tax disc and mot as it would still be registered yo the car?

In other words his personal plate is on the retention and on the car at the same time until the DVLA receive the tax disc back?

Im assuming I'd need to insure the car with the personal number and then call them with the number plate change when the new tax disc arrives?

All I want to know is that I'm not doing anything that would be illegal...

You don't send the old tax disc back anymore. You are now responsible for destroying the disc. I would have thought now the old plate is on retention and the V5 issued with the old number the car should be on the old plate. The PNC will show the cars old reg and it has tax and MOT so the police shouldn't stop for that reason. You could always re-apply to the DVLA for a new MOT and tax disc. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Rob I think you're right. I looked on the net this morning and the original number is now registered back to the car again whereas it wasn't 2 days ago.

Thanks for your advice everyone.

Your MOT and Tax disc should arrive first (usually some weeks before the V5) with the authority letter from DVLA to change the plates over... Did mine last Monday by walking into DVLA local office so they could check my paperwork and voila! The MOT and Tax disc was posted back through my door on Friday last week Thumbs Up

I would ring DVLA sharpish if i were you as the first letter containing your MOT & Tax disc sounds like its gone missing to me... If your log book has turned up with the original number showing then i would suggest DVLA would have expected that to have been put on some weeks ago... Leaving you open to problems with plod...
