hi folks

i need your valued help again guy's

i was coming home from a darts match last night when suddenly my headlamps went out for a couple of seconds and then came on again . this happened around every 20 seconds or so.

tonight i have started the RR up and checked to see if it is indeed following a pattern of some sort and is as follow !!

the headlamps stay on for 17 seconds, then both go out for 2 seconds then come back on. this happens EVERY 17seconds without fail

it does not matter if the switch is in normal dip mode, or auto mode, and regardless as to whether i have dip or main beam on, it does the same as mentioned above.

it does not affect the spot or fog lights, side lights of any other lights front or rear

we have had a lot of rain and snow and the rear spare wheel area was really wet but is all dried out now so dont know if that has anything to do with it

i wondered if it was the auto sensor playing up , but if i hold the on off switch, i can feel a little click when they go off and back on again

Sounds like the canbus check routine for broken circuits at play. Don't know enough to offer a solution though, although maybe a battery disconnection routine (you are good at this now, eh?) may sort it. .

HI JOE90, thanks for the reply, yes i might try that but i will wait to see if anyone else has heard of similar problems? i guess it is something silly ( hopefully ), but lets see what the lads can come up with as possibles. as a matter of interest, do you know where the sensor is that controls the auto side of the light switch? i assume it must be out in the open somewhere, so that it knows whether it is dark enough to switch the lights on . i suppose this could have thrown its rattle out the pram so to speak

AFAIK I don't have that option on my car. I'll have a look in rave, but guessing behind the rear view mirror? .

Could be a ballast firing up, going faulty & cutting out before resetting and starting all over again?

Also check out the LCM module (under A pillar cover by accelerator pedal) .

LCM needs to have a battery reset before you can diagnose any further...

HI GUYS, firstly what do you mean by a ballast fireing up? and regarding the LCM, should i do a re disconnect with the battery first?

If you have xenon bulbs you will have a ballast thingy on the back of the headlight unit that beefs things up to 50,000 volts. If this has gone on the blink (excuse pun) could be problem.

But each headlight has its own ballast, so both going off and coming back on at exactly the same time must share something in common. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Could also be a simple relay but since FFRRs don't use them anymore, it is most likely the LCM (that does all the relay and fuse type stuff these days). So faultcode reading is quite important here and keeping an eye out for a new/used LCM. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

HI everyone thanks for the replies, yes i think also it has to be something that has control of both lights as you mention.

yes i do have xeons fitted, but it does not matter it i only have the dipped lamps on , they still go out.

anyway i will do the battery bit first in a mo, and then see if that does anything you mention to test the LCM?

how would i actually do that,

also is it actually under the dash above the brake pedal or somewhere else

with regards to the battery re connection bit, i have just looked at John's 47p2 post, and he explains to also join the poss and neg cables together, which i believe is to discharge all holding power from the system

is this the procedure i am needing to follow for my test

Yes, you can try touching the + and - cables together when off the battery, this is supposed to help clear down the ECUs.

As in my previous post here, the LCM (Light Control Module) is behind the A pillar cover by the accelerator pedal (right hand drive) so on left hand drive most likely be on the passenger side. .

thanks for that, i will have a look tomorrow. it is actually a uk RR, so i assume it will be obvious when the cover is removed as to the what unit is the LCM
