If you're rational enough to read and take note of What Car? you should probably be driving a diesel Fabia. Things move on and the V6's numbers look faintly ridiculous alongside the competition - potentially over £90k for 255 bhp ...

I'd trade a tiny lack of agility from the heavier engine for lots more accessible torque - if you want something to do track days in a Range Rover probably shouldn't be too high on the list.

If you worry that much about agility, I wouldn't get the panoramic roof either - like driving around with a loaded roof rack all the time.

I am only talking cheapest to own and popularity not personal preferences or what i believe is the best car (4.4)......

Lets not forget a 30mpg + Range Rover is going to attract a lot of new owners to the clan.

And if buying for early re-sale forget ANY extras they will not add significant value.

Cheap comment, nothing wrong with a diesel fabia!
Things don't move on... the SDV8 is humiliated by the outgoing X5 40d if you're going to play the competition numbers game: .3 quicker to 60, half the price and achieves 7mpg more. Therefore in performance terms, you're in danger of looking like a rich fool.

255 BHP is plenty for a relaxed luxury car.
442lb ft vs 516 isn't enough of a difference for the price of a small car.

You make a valid point, RR's aren't designed to race.

Wow, thanks for the rapid response guys, some really useful thoughts.

I'm in the extremely fortunate position that I get a slight discount on new therefore depreciation won't be as huge as some hence the question. It seems that the 4.4l is what may be easiest to sell second hand later in the year although whether it'd re-coupe the extra £7k is perhaps less likely - arguably same could be said with going for the SE.

Yes, because when you're dropping £90k on something that will lose £15k per year, an extra 2-3 mpg will swing the deal ...

If we're counting pennies, I notice that the 4.4 misses out on the £270 road tax bracket by only 4g/km.

second that, its only in terms of what you want!
Whilst the SDV8 is a great engine, the SDV6 I feel is more in line with the times...

The lighter weight of the SDV6 should offset the slightly lower torque making the driving experience very similar to the heavier SDV8. Unless you drive it around a track the handling should be more than adequate for a big luxury 4x4.

Don't count on it being easier to sell: second hand buyers have one eye on economy, and if the SDV6 is scarce, it may even attract a premium as per TD6 vs 4.4V8... don't quote me on that though! Point taken re SE, could even just go Vogue SDV6.

I'm more cautious of going for the beefier engines these days having been burned by a RRS I bought a few years back. Bought the 3.6 TDV8 soon after it came out hoping that the premium I paid for it over the 2.7 version would be maintained when selling second hand, it didn't.

Indeed nothing wrong with a diesel Fabia, but it's difficult to make a purely objective case for a Range Rover at all. I agree that the LR engines aren't as impressive as the German rivals (e.g. Cayenne Diesel S with the VAG V8 - 377 bhp and 627 lb/ft @200-2750 rpm).

It's not just about peak numbers, it's accessible power and torque - the V8 will be the more relaxed drive (just like the last one was compared with an SDV6/8 speed Discovery 4).

Yeah, would have been hard to see that one coming, as even I thought the 3.6 in the Sport would be the choice engine! Seems value and economy figures higher on RR buyers' shopping lists than initially thought: Company Car Tax I am sure has an effect...

I take your point, but this is about damage limitation I guess Laughing

True, JLR have a long way to go still, as I say the hybrid should help!

I'm not so sure... the reduction in weight should mean that the new engine is adequate, plus I reiterate that the torque and power stats aren't really separate enough to justify the outlay...

As I said in the 2nd post on this thread the SDV6 will be popular as it allows many NEW previously non Range Rover buyers into the Range Rover market.
