Gearbox slip TDV8 6 spd

Hi,

Although the car creeps on the flat when I let the brake off in D or R, I’m finding hill starts a little tricky! The mechanical handbrake in my old RR was completely useless, so I got used to D and R holding the car stationary on hill starts. This one doesn’t and scared the heck out of me! The first time I tried it I thought I was sliding on ice. In reverse with gentle throttle pressure and still careering downhill forwards!

I’m guessing this isn’t right, but I’ve only had this car a few weeks and despite test driving a number of them, this is the only 6 spd box RR I’ve tried a decent (1:4) hill start in! I’ve never had any other auto that slipped like that on this hill except one I knew was broken! Thank goodness the electric handbrake actually works!

Is this likely to be adjustment or more serious? (It is under guarantee). I'm sure the dealer will be good about it, but I have no other experience should they tell me "they all dop that sir!" Wink

My S/C with 6 spd also does it uphill, depending on how steep but a 30 deg (getting out of our parking garage) will let it go back a little unless you put a bit of throttle on. I guess at low revs the torque converter does not put a lot of torque through and with a heavy car that is not enough to hold it stationary on "steeper" inclines. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Spray the gear linkage with WD40 or Grease on the side of the gearbox first as this is one of the symptoms of a corroded linkage...

It is very funny to see we all have our favourite remedies to resolve car issues. Gary sprays and lubes gear linkages, I prefer to clean all the ground connectors and battery clamps on a car Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

WD40 the linkage then clean the cable as much as possible of dirt then grease it with a decent thick grease. If you're not one of our more portly members it can be done with the car in standard (or off-road if you've had a good christmas or got sidesteps) height.

Failing that it might need a transmission oil drain and replace. I had mine done with just 1 fill, new filter and some additive put in and it's been great ever since. Others swear by the "megaflush" method thinking that replacing all the fluid is better than the 40-60% you can get with a normal flush. I'm not sure I want a machine to push all the sludge through the gearbox and prefer to think a clean filter and some new fluid will dilute the grime and hopefully catch it where it should be caught (in the filter). However it's personal preference and either will hopefully do some good, it's just what kind of added placebo effect you want Smile

It was added by the garage but they called it "RedLube", not been able to find it myself so I am assuming it's something along the lines of the Dr Tranny stuff.

Thanks, will have a look on the net to see if I can get hold of it. I have had filter and (almost) 7 liters of oil changed and just would like to add an additive to make sure the gearbox gets "the best". MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Not going to restart and old thorny chestnut, but the best is probably the stuff the gearbox was designed to run on - I personally avoid additives (unless I understand exactly why I am adding it and exactly what effect it will have).

Hi Simes, I tend to agree with you although I have had positive experiences with additives as well. And since my gearbox problems (3-4 shift in D not doing well) are still not gone, I may be clutching at straws (I am very hesitant to reflash the ECU with the Faultmate due to past reliability issues on data transfer).

If I could buy a reasonably priced up to date ECU or get it reflashed by an experienced outfit, I would try that, hoping that will resolve the issue (it is very likely it will resolve the issue) but I am hoping that an additive may help as well. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
