I went from an X5 to Disco3 to Range Rover. No comparison really. The Disco and Rangy beat it hands down. Yes the X5 does handle like a sports saloon but the ride quality and driver enjoyment on either of the landys is much better. Boots are bigger and more useable, I had a 3.0 litre petrol X5 and it was dam thirsty, about 22mpg. My chipped TD6 is returning close to 30 mpg, on a long run its over 30.. X5 off road.... I did try it a few times.... as you would imagine the Rangerovers are streets ahead. And this is coming from someone who was'nt a Landrover fan untill buying the Disco3 out of necessity. |

Also test drove a few X5s in my day, but the RR just has a presence the BMW will NEVER have.

I'm tempted to ask, "what's an X5" but that would just be sarcastic.......... |

I'd have a X5 over a Range Rover Sport any day of the week. The twin turbo diesel engine in the X5 is better than 3.6 TDV8 and X5 has a much nicer interior, even over the 2010 models. |

To be fair I am still slightly torn as the 35d engine is fantastic and should be much cheaper to run (fuel and tax). However we will most likely go for a FFRR as that is what we really want and I doubt i will be forever looking at X5s wishing I had bought one of them instead.

In your opinion of course.... I believe and sure most on this forum will agree that the "Lion" TDV8 twin-turbocharged Diesel V8 producing 272 PS (268 hp/200 kW) and 640 N·m (472 ft·lbf) is streets ahead of most other Diesels out there including the very latest X5 "Twin Turbo"(M57TUD30) Diesel 286 PS (210 kW; 282 hp)@4000, 580 N·m (430 lb·ft) - Its the extra Torque that makes the difference ... The X5 isn't even a proper off roader, stick a set of mud terrains on any RR - Sport included - and it will go almost anywhere, and it will tow a 3500kg tripple axle stock trailer full of 6 snorting bullocks.

Many quotes including: It makes you wonder. Next time the road ahead is closed, could you escape up the embankment and across the fields in an X5? I think not. But in a Range Rover you could. I know, because I’ve done it. Jeremy Clarkson - Sunday Times: November 4, 2007 ![]() |

Theres more....... Like the original (BMW X5), it’s clever from a technical standpoint but times have to be good for a car like this to make sense. And they aren’t. So it doesn’t. If you need a tall off-road car, buy a Range Rover diesel. If you need a five-seater that is fun, buy an M5. Don’t try to buy something that combines both things because what the X5 M proves is that really, it can’t be done. Jeremy Clarkson - Times Online Driving ![]() |
