Theres more.......

Like the original (BMW X5), it’s clever from a technical standpoint but times have to be good for a car like this to make sense. And they aren’t. So it doesn’t. If you need a tall off-road car, buy a Range Rover diesel. If you need a five-seater that is fun, buy an M5. Don’t try to buy something that combines both things because what the X5 M proves is that really, it can’t be done. Jeremy Clarkson - Times Online Driving Laughing

You are comparing the X5 M to the Range Rover which is slightly pointless comparison.

I agree, the FFRR is much better than the X5 but I would never consider a RRS over a X5. As for talking about going offroad, yes the RRS is better than the X5 but for most people, who cares? I'm sure most people on this forum did not buy their Range Rover for its off-road capabilities.

And going back to engines, I significantly prefer the 35d engine from the X5 to the TDV8 and I'd imagine the new 40d engine will be even better.

Don't get me wrong, I love my FFRR but if it came to a choice between the X5 and RRS, the X5 would win every time.

I once strayed from the RR fold to a mercedes ml and it took me 6 weeks to return and not left since , No other car has the same presence of the RRFF , I have to admit that the ML and th X5 perform and handle better than RRFF but theyre just ot the same

I think we all all struggling to agree here really.

The X5 is no offroad 4X4 wherby the FFRR and the RRS are excellent both on and off road.

For Non Off Roaders the X5 35d may be as good or better than the RRS (Jury out)

The latest X5 35d obviously has a very good engine but its less torque-y than the 3.6l TDV8.

LR are introducing a 4.4l TDV8 soon so I wonder how that torque monster will compare with the new X5 40d engine?

Either way the FFRR TDV8 or S/C remains King of the Road Thumbs Up

Interesting thoughts chaps. Keep them comming.

I'm still evaluating options but an early FFRR is still where I'd like to go to. Still need to sell the current toys (M3 and V8 Defender).

No need for the "durr"; it makes you look rather childish.

We were all comparing X5 vs Range Rover; doesn't matter who we are quoting, we are ones comparing.

To be fair I am still slightly torn as the 35d engine is fantastic and should be much cheaper to run (fuel and tax). However we will most likely go for a FFRR as that is what we really want and I doubt i will be forever looking at X5s wishing I had bought one of them instead.

You won't. Period.

It is great. 1987 90, matt black with a RRC 3.5 V8 with a lovley exhaust. Recaro's seats out of a Cosworth. Built by a chap who races Radicals, and went for a P38. £3k bundle of fun.

Why on earth is there a discussion of RRS against an X5 on this forum?

I tourght this was a forum about the best of the best.

Why don't YOU read.

'For Non Off Roaders the X5 35d may be as good or better than the RRS (Jury out)'

You have even mentioned RRS

That post was a summary of the points discussed during the thread. RRS was mentioned in comparison to the X5 earlier so I included it in my summary.

Why are you so concerned about that the RRS its not exactly a distant relation of the FFRR. Try avoiding this thread if it offends you. Rolling Eyes

Gazellio, for your info the RRS is based on the Disco, not the full fat

There's no wrong or right here, it's all personal choice.

If you ask a RR form to choose the answers obvious, Ask the BMW forum to choose and again you know what they'll say.

For me the presence of the FFRR beats the X5, if your choosing between both then I'd certainly take them out back to back on long test drives and also think hard about your needs.

If it's mostly town driving the X5 is easier to manage. If you want a 4x4 that works and looks good then it's the RR! TDV8 HST Sport **Current**
