Interesting reading this post.
All the alternators that are listed as having failed, bar one, are on 2007 vehicles.
Tends to suggest to me that a batch of sub-standard alternators were used that year.

i think it may be a brave man who has a go without ramps etc.

Having just been quoted £569 for a 12 month warranty policy from the MD in derby, that sounds cheaper than a new alternator.........and other Censored can break too.

Rich TDV8's went and thats on an 08 plate. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As an owner of a 2007 TDV8 I'm very worried about this Shocked Going off to Europe in March on a long trip so don't want it to fail there. Will the dealer do anything about this in advance? Any simple precautions that can be taken? Any early symptons?

Grateful for any advice. 2012 5.0L S/C

Tony. Thanks for posting that. A truly horrible sound! Shocked Did it happen long before it stopped charging or does that sound mean it's already failed? 2012 5.0L S/C

It started with a slight noise the day before, then got very bad on the way home, next the head lights started to dim and alternator light came on. Just got home and the battery was flat, would not restart.

Tony. Thanks. Not much notice of failure really. I if I want to be really sure I'll have to get the alternator changed at my own cost before going on my trip. It would be a nightmare if the alternator were to fail on my long trip to Europe. I've changed alternators on most of my previous LR vehicles so this will be the first I will have to give up on before I start. It's too big a job for me. I guess that's what they call progress. Mine failed without any warning - fortunately it did it at home.

Everything seemed fine when we got back - went to use the car an hour later and it wouldn't open - so tried the other remote - then the key, then realised no lights came on - there was no power at all.

I called the RAC, the guy opened the bonnet & said it's your alternator, I can smell it !

He tested wuith a booster pack & told me it was pulling 160A just sitting there.

It's a complete pain - I disconnected & charged the battery - I needed to reconnect it just so I could do anything - like put it in neutral !

Had to be trailered to the garage to get a new alternator. I also got a new battery just to be on the safe side.
