Mine is also a 4.4 2003 and went dud at 71k, had it replaced by a local independent and cost £780.00. They said it was a pig of a job and the unexpected time taken is what pushed the price up Andy |

As an owner of a 2007 TDV8 I'm very worried about this Going off to Europe in March on a long trip so don't want it to fail there. Will the dealer do anything about this in advance? Any simple precautions that can be taken? Any early symptons?

Tony. Thanks for posting that. A truly horrible sound! Did it happen long before it stopped charging or does that sound mean it's already failed? 2012 5.0L S/C

It started with a slight noise the day before, then got very bad on the way home, next the head lights started to dim and alternator light came on. Just got home and the battery was flat, would not restart. |

Tony. Thanks. Not much notice of failure really. I if I want to be really sure I'll have to get the alternator changed at my own cost before going on my trip. It would be a nightmare if the alternator were to fail on my long trip to Europe. I've changed alternators on most of my previous LR vehicles so this will be the first I will have to give up on before I start. It's too big a job for me. I guess that's what they call progress. 2012 5.0L S/C

Mine failed without any warning - fortunately it did it at home.
