Smoke from filler cap!

Iv done a search but it hasn't returned anything, whilst messing on with my td6 today I had the ennine running and the bonnet up, I'm getting a bit of smoke coming out round the oil filler cap? Never had this on another car, oil level is fine, recently serviced and drives how it should but surely it can't be right? I checked to make sure the filler cap was on correctly and it seems ok

Sounds like the engine breather needs servicing/replacing.

It's got a receipt for the new vortex style crankcase breather so that should be ok, are there any other breathers, could it be a head gasket or even pressure coming back past (worn) rings? Worried now after a search on google!

Just to be sure, take the engine breather out and check the hoses as well. The breather may have been changed but that doesn't mean the hoses are clean, they could have clogged up although it is interesting that it happened just when you were fiddling with the EGR. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Thanks ill check tomorrow, I'm not sure but it might of been doing it before I cleaned the egr, where are the other breathers to check are connected? Could the seal under the filler cap just be leaking as its not in the best condition and its just a very small leak hence quite a lot blowing out, I'll take the oil filler cap off when the wife gets home and see how much comes out with the cap off

Try to find the workshop manual online. For the 2002-2005 model it is available as PDF, quite big. It shows all the hoses etc.

I assume you have looked around the Wiki as well ?? Also in the Wiki you find links to downloads etc.

I've just been out and checked when my wife got home so the car was already warm, I couldn't see any smoke escaping with the cap on like earlier but when I removed the cap with the engine running there was white smoke coming out not excessive, bit like a kettle, it's a white colour, I removed the dipstick, there's no smoke/oil coming out of there

White is probably water vapour, if it is a small amount (thin wisps) I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it is steaming like a steamtrain smoke stack you have issues Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

There's a bit more than I would like, I will check the breathers tomorrow and pop to the Indy and get them to take a look, could it be a head gasket or worse? I thought the engines where bulletproof and it was everything else that went wrong lol, it's on 97k miles with full sh with oil changes in between :s

I just done all my 4.4 cyclone / condensor and pcv. I know yours is td6 but it sounds the crank case ventilation is similar. There are a total of 4 hoses that need to be checked as you will discover when you search for it. I also discovered that as well as the cyclone / oil condensor being solid, so were the 2 smaller hoses that are not as easy to get to as the two bigger top ones, although by no means impossible. Just kneel up ontop of your engine. You'll end up with a sore grubby forehead after bending over leading against the bulkhead whilsts accessing the two smaller hoses.

Most importantly, I also discovered that the metal pipe (two small gauge pipes , one smaller than thr other that branch together at the bottom just above a banjo bolt which goes to the sump) which collects the condensed oil from the bottom of the cyclone, and also to a lesser extent the pcv cassette at the back of the inlet manifold, was completly gunged up. Therefore, no matter the condition of the hoses , cyclone etc, the oil would have just backed up and clogged again.

All will become clear when you take out the ventilation plenum and have a look. I used a length of rubber tube to slide over metal pipes and blew down it to see if it was clear. If it is you will be able to hear oil bubbling in the sump.

My references about the pcv are from knowledgeable posters on this forum and from doing the job thoroughly myself.

I would guess there is a good chance that the affore mentioned metal pipe is blocked and could not be helping your vapours.

I unblocked mine with a airline, jubilee clips and a blow torch. MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

That sounds like it could be beyond my capabilities, do you know what section of the online manual it's in? Cheers

Do these pipes run from the crankcase breather ie at the back to the left of the engine? Thanks for everyone's advice so far!
