Canada 2008 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Java Black
Are the diesel Range Rovers any good?

Hi. I've been reading the forum for a few weeks and decided to join.

I'm in Canada and have just got myself a couple of Rovers after admiring them for decades. Very Happy They're pretty rare and rather expensive over here. I picked up a lovely 2008 HSE lux in the summer and absolutely love it! This week I finalized a deal on a 1997 Disco with tons of off road gear. I know the Rangie can handle the rough stuff, but I don't like bashing it about in the bush. It's still new nice and shiny! Mr. Green

Question: both cars are, of course, petrol V8s. That's all Land Rover sell here. Many Land Rover guys here lament the lack of a diesel option. The v8 is fantastic - smooth, powerful and almost silent. I did a little figuring with the mileage on the Rangie compared to a UK spec tdv8. With the difference in fuel prices, I figure the cost of running a petrol v8 here is about the same as a tdv8 in the uk. So, would you diesel drivers switch if it wasn't for the cost? If you could run a petrol for the same price, would you? What are the differences in driving a diesel vs a petrol? Thanks

If the economy and performance was the same then i would chose a petrol wthout a shadow of a doubt, they are smoother and quieter!
However, it will never happen, personally i wouldnt have a petrol v8 right now because i cover too many mles and the inconvenience of fuelling up all the tme, at least wth a desel you get nearly a couple hundred extra miles per tank, and of course it is cheaper!

Well I previously had the SC 4.2 and changed to TDV8 not for any reason other than I got fed up spending most of my time filling it up at garages ..... Would I go back to a petrol more than likely Censored to running costs ====================================

IF the economy and cost per litre was the same i would swap for an SC but thats it. Low down grunt and lazy cruising is what mine does mostly and when offroad I can put it in Low Range and it will put itself up quite a steep gradient with ease in 2/3 Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Agree with Mick 100%. Diesel is Satan's urine. I run a TDV8 but before this I had a petrol V8 Disco-3. Most days I wish I'd kept it. Sadly LR don't make the D4 with the petrol engine for the UK market or I'd have one in a flash.

^^^ My thoughts too Dom spill some diesel on yourself and the clothes are shagged , step in some Censored overspill at the garage and the inside of the car is howling with the smell ... ====================================

I would never consider a diesel if the economics weren't a lot better (over here there are no diesel FFRRs either). The only thing could be range, as in if I would be doing an overland trip through Africa with it. Diesels just go a lot further and with some extra jerrycans you can get very far, on petrol that is a bit of an issue.

Funny thing is, over here the petrol used to be 65 Naira and diesel (still is) 95 Naira. Petrol is now the same and it is rumored that the fuel subsidy is going to be abolished completely soon as well, making petrol around 135 Naira I believe. Since that is still relatively cheap and I don't do a lot of km's anyway, I prefer to keep the S/C despite the economics (if I would have the opportunity to get a TDV8). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Like Mick I went from an SC to a 3.6 TDV8, and the only thing I find mildy irritating is the diesel noise and ocassional smell, other than that, I find I drive the TDV8 more and probably faster than the SC, because the SC just drinks petrol when it's used "properly"!

Would I have another SC? probably not, but I would think about a 4.4 TDV8! Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

In a garage why not just park with the pump on the passenger side of the vehicle and watch where you walk? Then use the plastic gloves?? Or just avoid the garages Wink

V8 D4's are about but iirc they are armoured... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

^^^ Maybe in the ar5e end of Jockistan. Attended service is long gone from everywhere I've been in the last 10 years.

And no, it's not a myth. Mostly due to morons who don't understand or don't care about leaving a friggin mess I would agree but the cold hard facts are that diesel pumps are usually greasy and messy with a surrounding pool of Satan-Pi55 ready to be walked in.

Being 100% honest, how many people would drive a tractor if fuel was free? Nuff said.

Diesel and petrol pumps are on same stands so makes no odds!

Always park on the wrong side as the pump will still reach and you stand on clean concrete.

Thanks for all the input! Much appreciated. Very Happy

And to the one poster, I too enjoy 'bashing in the bush' - that's what the Disco is for Mr. Green I found out the hard way that 20" wheels are rather vulnerable off road, but the RR was amazing. She went over terrain one couldn't walk on and never even spun a wheel and that's with road tyres. Thumbs Up
