Voltage Question

Just driven the car over 7 miles, when we got to the other end I did the onboard diagnostics and the voltage reads 11.8V on the digital dash display, now I dont see how this can be correct as the car turns over very fast and it would be flat after driving with lights and demisters on etc so my question is can the voltage at the bat be say 12.5 static and more after a run but wherever it takes its reading from (terminal R) lower, ie a bad cable. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

I'd check the battery with a multimeter, the on-board diagnostics are not great for voltages IMHO. Check with a multimeter both with the engine running and with it off. With the engine going (idling) you should see about 13.5-14 volts and without the resting voltage should be around 12.6 volts (for a fully charged battery), 12.3 volts would normally indicate only a 50% charge in the battery for example.

^^^^ I agree, need a good voltmeter. Thumbs Up
14.0V at the battery with the engine running at about 2000rpm.
12.6V at the battery a few hours after a run with nothing other than the engine switched on.

That would be about right then but 12.4 is a bit low, also at night you can see the display getting brighter if you rev the car. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

I hadn't realised that 12.4v would be too low when measuring the battery with everything off? I thought anything over 12v would be good. Maybe I need a new battery?

If I don't use my car for a few days the voltage drops to 12.4V and stays there.
Car starts no problem.
LR indicate a requirement of 12.5V on the battery in the electrical manual.
0.1V below that is neither here nor there.
It'll change by that much when it's cold.
