Portugal 2002 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black
TD5 towing V L322

Had to deliver 2 big horses to the Vets in Aveiro . Trailer was Ifor Williams HB510 towed with Defender TD 5. On arriving , I had to turn into a narrow gateway, from a very narrow country road. My clearance was a couple of centimetres on each side.I did manage to rub the rubber strips around the trailer's light fittings at the rear but got in and out with some difficulty.The main problem was the Defender's very limited turning circle ( 7.60 tyre size )
Next week I must return to collect the horses, and I was wondering if it would be better to use the L322? (Tyres are standard size R18's.The turning circle and manoeuvreability of the RR are a major plus, but the width/length are a negative.
Has anyone out there had experience of movement in a restricted area, comparing these two towing vehicles? Range Rover Vogue TD6 2002

Its going to be fatter.

There are some videos MORC have done of me going through some super tight spaces like the wayfarers and such like and its been so tight sometimes a fag packet wouldn't fit either side!

I scraped the pass mirror while folder in last time Sad

Is it not possible to park outside said gate and walk the horses to the trailer?

The L322 will be happier at speed and quieter inside than the TD5 and dare i say it may prove cheaper as well... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

MORC? Would like to see the video's!
I'm not worried about the FFRR passing through, but as I make the turn, the HB510 will not have time to straighten out behind tow-vehicle. If the FF turns more sharply,I imagine the trailer also make a sharper turn in , following the FF?
Although a narrow lane, there is constant traffic up and down, but of smaller type cars.driving habits here of low quality.( In Britain, horses have right of way? ) ours generally load easily, but very occasionally, refuse needing a turn -around and another attempt, this could be dangerous if horse should decide to back into one of the formula one locals , trying to squeeze impatiently by.

Tow 2hours there , and 2hours back. Long climbs and descents , in Defender gear changes, noise levels etc..Overtaken constantly by big International transporters going downhill, and then to be overtaken again going uphill, with Dender.
For the motorway section, it would be much easier in the RR, put it into cruise control ( no speeding tickets! ) quieter etc. Additionally some sections , raised up, have warnings for sudden strong wind gusts- the RR being heavier would be better here too.I'm only Doubtfull re the final gate entry manoeuvre. Range Rover Vogue TD6 2002

Have the same trailer and my house is on a country road with tight access.I've 2 options.I can drive in from one direction only which takes a bit of maneuvering,or reverse the trailer in which is not as bad as it sounds.

what might work for you is that starting as far over on the side of the road as possible,I turn in driving at the outer pillar of the turn and when my bumper is almost against it i reverse back a little.straighten up then drive in the gate.This has the effect of putting the trailer on a wider arc/line than if I had just tried drive straight in and gives me enough clearance to get the trailer in.

the easiest option is to just load the horses on the road.It wont take long and takes all the stress and worry out of the journey down.Bring the rangie for the comfort and the longer wheelbase makes for a more stable towing vehicle

You wont be half as tired when you get back as you would getting out of the defender Thumbs Up

The range rover will be a 100 times easier to manoeuvre a trailer with. I've towed trailers/caravans with both 90/110 defenders ,td5 discovers and range rovers. The worst being the discovery

Thanks Brian,
I was thinking of asking a pal of mine to hitch his Discovery for the tow-job, as I though the Defender was the least easy turning circle . I have not had any towing experience with Discoveries. Range Rover Vogue TD6 2002

I had a discovery 2 facelift 7 seater with the air suspension on the rear and it was a terrible tow car. Unless you turn in or remove the steering stops the turning circle is a joke. What I found with the air suspension the trailer would snake unless the trailer was loaded 100% perfect.
