wouldnt go in gear and hello Forum

Hi forum,

This is my first post on here so go easy on me please... Big Cry

This morning after dropping my son off at nursery I pulled away fine then suddenly my 04 l322 v8 went into no gear and said select Neutral on the dash screen, I followed this I selected Neutral switched the car off then back on then tried to put it into drive but it wouldn't have it!
As I was blocking the rd leading up to the nursery I had to get another dad dropping his son off to use his 4x4 to push my car backwards whilst running n Neutral, once he had done this I again switched off my car then back on and all was well. So what was that all about ? My concern is that the car slipped out of gear if that were to happen on a busy junction I hate to think what would be the result.

Any Ideas as to why my car did this it seems to be running a bit slow on gear changes now and some times I am even getting up to high revs before she will change gear ... any advise ..

Flush the gearbox and replace the oil would be my initial thoughts. Confused

Welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

Do you think this would resolve the issue as I am wondering could it be a torque converter problem I would prefer for it to be just a flush and oil change as I am sure that would be the cheaper fix...

I'm not sure what I have is any way related to your problem...

Stiff selector; progressively getting worse over the winter months. My car would occasionally jump out of gear (selector shows D), but dash display shows nothing. If I hold the selector in D by pulling back, the car is fine, and dash shows D. I figured there was an issue with the linkage. Ignoring this, I just drove the car around in sport mode over the last month with no issues... until last night. I had a Transmission Fail warning come up on the display, and lost the use of sport mode and manual gear selection. I was able to drive home with the car in D, by holding the selector in D. All shifts seamless as expected. Release pressure from gear lever, and the car would pop out of gear (when moving), or when stationery, not popping out of gear, but loss of drive and the D on the dash display.

I found a technical bulletin regarding the problems for the ZF gearbox, and my symptoms are a classic case of a seized linkage cable and mis-match of sensors as a result of this - an easy fix.

http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...0guide.pdf

P.S. to check if it is this, when you are in drive, just put a bit of forward pressure on your selector (not much though), and see if your dash D display goes out. Ambient temperatures and moisure levels make a difference to this too I have found.

There are a lot of different fault/fixes in the guide; so if you do not have the same problem as me, you may be able to identify it being something else within that guide.

HTH Smile

Good luck, and hope it is a trivial and inexpensive fix for you.

Maybe the link should be a sticky?

Oh if only there were a dealer in this country .... Bow down

Update on post

today again my car would not go into gear after I had just driven it. After trying to get it back into gear I returned it back to P there was a kind of grinding clicking noise (sounded similar to putting something on a fan blade). I switched the car off on etc but this was no help, the low range light on dash came on I put the gear shift in N and tried to change range mode but couldn't. I finally got a couple of people to push the car forward which for some unknown reason sorted out the getting it into drive but the low range light stayed on.

Does it make any difference if you select Neutral and switch it between Low and High range a few times? Discovery 4 HSE

I'm out of ideas I'm afraid, your best bet may be to call a specialist or a dealer service dept. Have you got any numbers/ a copy of LRO for example? Discovery 4 HSE

on the td6 trans if the oil is low in the transfer box the high/ low range wont work as it relies on oil to make the pump select high or low if no oil it stays in neutral in yhe transfer box , get down the dealer get a litre of transfer oil and top it up its blind folded hand tied behind your back easy Thumbs Up

*could someone attach a pic from rave or anywhere of the transferbox fill and drain plugs arrowed *

Thumbs Up onto no6 Range Rover
