(SOLVED) Who can identify this part on the transmission?

Hi gents,

I've looked on RAVE and cannot identify this "screw" that is in the upper half of the transmission above the sump pan. It looks to be stainless steel and its weeping oil.

Another (in focus this time please) photo needed further away so we can see where it is.

On initial assessment it looks like the transmission filler plug (or a variant of it, or a 3rd party bodge - hence why it is leaking!) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

No other photo available at present im afraid. Thats the sump to the left of the photo. Seems to be the only part of the underneath thats stainless?, or atleast galvanised. MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

the filler plug is located more to the corner of the transmission according to RAVE. This mystery part is located more in line with the centre of the sump pan, half way along its length if this makes sense. MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

I think its the end of the pivot shaft for the xyz switch. (if its the gearbox I'm thinking off). Not sure if they are any seals available for it though.

I agree with Brian, it looks like the end of the selector shaft

It’s the opposite end of the shaft from the splined end which drives the inhibitor switch, at the bottom of the photo below :

The leak will be from the 10x18x5 lip seal labelled /120 in the diagram below :

You can buy them from Land Rover – part number LR023293. Should cost less than £3.

Thanks to brian and especially Phil for taking the time to post the drawings and photos. I'll get onto the case or replacing the seal. Will I need to drain some of the oil out when I remove the selector shaft ? Or can the seal be replaced with the rod in situe ?

I’m lucky in that I only work on transmissions that are sat on my workbench – in which case the seal is simple to access and replace! Working within the confines of the underside of a vehicle on a ramp – I’m not so sure how easy it would be. RAVE does describe the process though (albeit for the inhibitor switch end of the shaft). I think you’d have to do it with the shaft in-situ, otherwise you’d be looking at draining the fluid, removing the sump pan, removing the filter, removing the valve block, knocking out the roll pin that secures the rooster comb to the selector shaft, and then sliding the selector shaft over by 20mm or so until it clears the seal. Quite a big job (unless, of course, you were thinking of replacing the filter and fluid anyway).

The fluid level in the transmission with the engine running should be just about at the top of the sump i.e. at the face where it bolts on to the casing. With the engine off, the fluid level will be higher than this, but I’d be surprised if it went as high as the selector shaft level.
