Noise when Accelerating

Car has started making a whining noise when pressing the accelerator. More noticeable when at higher speeds and only makes noise when foot is on accelerator. When you take foot off accelerator noise goes.

Sounds like diff or gearbox. Only had it 2 months aswell!

Any ideas what it is?

2005 TD6 with 116k.

Whine like in a fan noise, or metallic whine/screech like a wheel bearing?

Not like a fan, it's like a washer jet noise. Very quiet at 35 but at 65/70 it's quite noticeable. Weird thing is only when accelerator is pressed, even if its pressed very lightly not even enough to gain speed you can hear it.

Could be. Garage today said it sounded like differential or gearbox but going to speak to warranty company tomorrow and then it's going to land rover specialist to have a look at.

Thanks for your help.

As only had car couple of months i spoke to Citizens Advice to get advice as to where i stand with getting this diagnosed and resolved. Adviced me that as only had it couple of months under Sale of Goods act its for garage to resolve free of charge,

Spoke to Garage I got it from as adviced by Citizens Advice and they then tried to fob me with various reasons why they shouldnt pay such as; they sold me warranty so I didn't come back to them, they gave me too much for my px and it's not a brand new range rover! All completely irrelevant and the law states its for them to resolve after such a short time after purchase.

Garage asked me to speak to warranty company to see if they wold cover diagnosis and fixing issue. Spoke to them and they said if the part is under warranty they will cover it but impossible to say until looked at. Told garage this and that there is additioal cost as land rover specialist labour rate is over warranty companies limit of £45ph (land rover specialist was £55). They said that if it isn't covered by warranty company then fairest option was to go 50/50 on repair costs!!! I disagreed and spoke to citizens advice again to give them update and ask their advice. I confirmed what they had told me previously and went back to garage. I said that sale of goods act states they have to fix and the reply was then a very vicious one saying "take me court then"!!

So now looks like this is going to end up in court. No idea how they think they can win- I'm only telling them what citizens advice are telling me! I'm legally entitled to get this resolved for free or my money back for the car. I'd take either, just want my car of 2 months fixed!

I have just been through a similar issue of a garage not accepting their responsibility under sale of goods act. I made a claim under the legal expenses cover I have on my home insurance.

I think the best you will get is a repair FOC, but you may have to pay for the inspection and make that part of the claim against the garage, if you genuinely want your money back for the vehicle (I don't think you will after 2 months of use) then you will have to park the vehicle up and not use it, i.e show evidence of rejecting the vehicle 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

So did you get car repaired yourself and then make claim against them to get costs back? He said I shouldn't use car- this is just if I want a refund then? If I want it repaired I can continue to use it? If its gearbox I don't want to pay for this myself!

I got a solicitor through my legal expenses cover and they contacted the garage, it took 6 moths to sort, but I got a cheque for the estimated cost of repair, mine was a TPMS fault (I used the payment to buy an IID tool and switch the TPMS off). The solicitor didn't cost me anything apart from the £25 additional insurance premium I had paid 8 months earlier

If you just want a repair, then you can continue to use the vehicle, I wouldn't want to pay for the gearbox myself either. As you have already found out the garage will try every trick in the book to avoid paying for a new box as well, but if the the law is the law and they sound liable under the sale of goods act 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Been garage today and there was no oil in front diff!

Have put Oil in but still got noise obviously from damage done. So new front diff required!

Anything else it could of done? Diffs having no oil common issue?

Did it have the front diff recall done? It may still be eligible and could be the reason for it failing?

Yes all recalls have been done on it. Front diff recall was done in 2009.

OK shame that may have resolved it.

Be aware that the dealer may not have been aware of any fault on the car and if the noise was not present when you bought it this is very likely. Most decent dealers either supply a quality warranty to cover any unknown faults that may occur in the first few months or decide to cover that cost themselves. As this dealer has paid for a warranty policy its only fair to try and claim from this first. Most dealers rely on reputation and there really is no point in selling a car with known faults.

I understand your frustration but Range Rovers do go wrong and this can happen at any time. I hope the warranty company cover it in full.

Good luck.

Thanks. Hope warranty sort it as that's easiest option but if not then its for him to pay to be fixed.

If he has supplied a dodgy warranty that's useless then yes that's his fault. However all half decent warranties should cover front diff failure. Not in your interest to suggest this was anything other than a sudden failure which in all likelihood is what it was.. Thumbs Up
