Are you refering to the service indicator that appears below the speedo when you turn the ignition on?
An indication of type of service required and mileage to it displays for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on.
At the best of times it is pretty faint and you have to look for it.
Not sure if the display is intended to be lit or not.

Every time you switch on the ignition the mileage indicator changes (for a few seconds) to the amount of miles left before a service is due
