Night Driving

Decided to have a bit of a play with the camera this evening and try to get some good shots from inside the car whilst in motion. The aim being to get the 'painted light effect' - need to find a way to secure the camera more securely as I think the tripod must have vibrated a little during the exposure making the images a little 'softer' than I would ideally like.

What settings did you use on the camera? .

Joe, camera was set up on the tripod (which was secured in the back of the car, 2 legs on the floor and 1 on the seat - then further stabilised by hanging my camera bag on the back of it to weight it down) and I set the aperture to f9 and the shutter to 20 seconds. ISO was at 100 and the camera focus point was set at the dash-top before being switched to manual focus (the camera is going nowhere and you want the focal point to be inside the car so that it remains sharper. Also, I didn't want it 'hunting' for a focal point each time). I also switched off the VR in the lens as this causes more issues than it solves on longer exposures. Camera was triggered in my case by an IR remote (bought for £2 from Hong Kong as opposed to £30 for the official Nikon one in the UK).
I had guesstimated the camera settings - if it was too light I could have reduced the shutter time or decreased (closed down - which counter-intuitively means increasing the f-number) the aperture and if too dark then vice-versa. Luckily for me it seemed to work quite well...

Ah conclusion to my previous question!

It appears that the Glovebox switch doesn't illuminate, kind of odd when the air vent controls do...

Or we both have faulty glovebox switches...

Great pics BTW Thumbs Up

Wow, great pictures! Brilliant to see different pictures other than jetties on lakes or depth of field on flowers!

Fantastic effect. Thumbs Up

It would be good to do the same during the day. Just would need to play with aperture and exposure times. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.
