Help with Hybrid Digital Tuner

Managed to get my hand on a digital hybrid tuner (Par No 6 966 615 ) i already have an aftermarket DVB-T that uses the existing aerials so i know i can get a signal - fitted the new unit and have two problems.

1. Screen will only display 4:3
2. Can get the unit to scan but after the scan there are no channels displayed?

Unit is set to United Kingdom and PAL so either the unit is U/S or i am doing something wrong.

Any help appreciated.

Gary

From a quick look on the web, that seems a part number for the hybrid tuner, so unless someones stuck a sticker on an analogue one..........

My hybrid tuner takes quite a while to finish scanning, and I get a differing number of channels found depending on where I am, ie at home or 3 or 4 miles away etc.

Not sure about the 4:3 screen. I know with Navcoder you can change all sorts of settings on the unit.

There is a hidden menu where you may be able to change settings for the video module..........

Gary, I suggest you follow the instructions to go into the hidden menu as i don't believe the software numbers of the video module can be changed there and they will tell the truth about its identity. If as you say you can only select 4:3 as a display then there is a worrying chance that you have an original tv tuner in a newer box!

This happened to me a few years ago with a BM54 tuner, it was advertised with a certain part number and as having the aux input but when I fitted it and checked the hidden menus it was clearly an older model in a newer silver box! Fortunately for me the seller was genuine and didn't realise and gave me my money back.

Thanks for your replies, i have had a look in the hidden menu and can not find anything regarding screen resolution.

With the exisitng Analogue unit i can select Display settings but not with the Hybrid unit.

Had another go this evening and it looks as if Certain channels are Analogue and others are Digital as when i select certain channels and go back to the menu i can see the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) for that channel (nothing is shown in the guide) Exclamation

So will have a fiddle with the Country and PAL settings to see if i can get it to work.

Frustrating or what

Hi Gary,
The hidden menu does not contain screen format IIRC. You'll need Navcoder and an ibus interface (search for Resler interface). Not expensive. I'd first check the PN on the tuner first, tho. I've posted a list of all tuner PNs and what they are and I believe Andy has as well.

Andy,
Too late now, but Aux in is 'activated' on the BM54 with an appropriate connector. The connector contains resistors (similar to what Apple does with the official iPhone/iPod connectors) that identify it as an authorized BMW Aux in. There are instructions on the net for building this with resistors and appropriate connector pins rather than paying the €50 BMW tax. But w/o this connector plugged into the BM54 no Aux shows anywhere. Rolling Eyes

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply, the part No is 6-966-615 which is listed as a retrofit Hybrid unit. The Country setting is set to "United Kingdom" although there are also a list of PAL settings in the menu? should i set it to one of these? or will it set to PAL with the setting on "United Kingdom"?

I am using the original aerials, and these work with my aftermarket DVB-T really well. Only changing the unit to get away from using the aftermarket remote control unit but if i can not get it to work will have to try and return the Hybrid unit.

Gary

Pretty Sure you just need United Kingdom no need to mess with PAL settings. I had same issue with a unit in a car I thought was hybrid. Turned out to be analogue only.......

I'm tempted to think that as you see the EPG, it ought to be a genuine hybrid unit......

Mine works OK with the standard aerials.

To be fair, on the analogue unit, the aerials had connections left and right, as it were, whereas on the hybrid unit, the connections were turned through 90 degrees, so they became front and back if you get me, as orientated in the car.

I never knew whether to plug the one on the original left connection to the front or rear one on the new unit, but just connected them up.

Can't see that this should make a difference to reception, but I'm not an expert........ 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Steve, I agree that the aux input is activated with the correct lead (which I had) but like all of the FFRR BM54 units there was a period when the BMW BM54 also didn't have aux input built into its software so even with the correct lead attached the aux option did not display on the monitor. By entering the hidden menu I was able to read the software version of this "rogue" BMW BM54 tuner which was older than the part number shown on the case. Hence in my instance I had older "guts" in a newer box Shocked

Gary, frrom what you have said about seeing the EPG then you must have a hybrid unit and you can ignore my comments regarding an older unit in a newer box. The aerial connections on the tv tuner shouldn't make any difference but just to be sure you could try reversing them and as also already stated you only need to select UK for the freeview to work, no need to change the pal settings.

Also try and find a nice high spot where you can park up and re-tune, hopefully then you wil pick up some stations and know all is working ok. Thumbs Up
