Alternator fried

Car was running fine - went to go out an hour or so after having last used it and it was dead.

Doors wouldn't unlock - opened the door manually, but nothing at all - not even the lights would work.

Got the RAC out & they could smell the alternator - on his booster pack it was pulling 150A so had completely drained the battery Sad

Disconnected the battery & put that on charge - it's a fairly Bosch so hopefully it will survive.

In all fairness, alternators fail on other cars as well. I have had a few cars where they failed, although they were all older cars (the FFRR is the newest car I ever owned). Also alternators are third party components that all car manufacturers buy. Even Mercedes isn't "that reliable" anymore due to cost cutting on these sort of items (amongst others). Still it is very annoying when it happens (like my front strut airbags that failed after 7.5 years Evil or Very Mad ). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Yep, they do go wrong from time to time. Mine did a while back and a friend's D3 did it as well only a month or so back.

The good news is they are rebuildable with a replacement diode pack (rectifier) at about £30 plus VAT. A good "How-To" over on D3 for this as well.

Good guide, but swapping the alternator is beyond my level of competence and available time - booked in tomorrow £530 Big Cry

For the £500 difference I would learn. Very rapidly. Rolling with laughter

In fact, it's one of the reasons I did learn. Making dealers rich is more painful than having a large boyfriend called "Bubba", well at least, I imagine it is Whistle

Sound scompelling when put like that, but I am getting a whole new alternator, not just a new diode - is that the only thing that can go wrong with them ?

It drained the battery pretty quickly and was awfully smelly.....

Severe lack of time & needing the car back means that I'm paying the ransom on this one.
