In all fairness, alternators fail on other cars as well. I have had a few cars where they failed, although they were all older cars (the FFRR is the newest car I ever owned). Also alternators are third party components that all car manufacturers buy. Even Mercedes isn't "that reliable" anymore due to cost cutting on these sort of items (amongst others). Still it is very annoying when it happens (like my front strut airbags that failed after 7.5 years ). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Yep, they do go wrong from time to time. Mine did a while back and a friend's D3 did it as well only a month or so back.

Good guide, but swapping the alternator is beyond my level of competence and available time - booked in tomorrow £530 |

For the £500 difference I would learn. Very rapidly. In fact, it's one of the reasons I did learn. Making dealers rich is more painful than having a large boyfriend called "Bubba", well at least, I imagine it is |

Sound scompelling when put like that, but I am getting a whole new alternator, not just a new diode - is that the only thing that can go wrong with them ? It drained the battery pretty quickly and was awfully smelly..... Severe lack of time & needing the car back means that I'm paying the ransom on this one. |
