Which FFRR to have?

Hi all

I am looking to buy my first range rover. I have decided on a Series III.

Ive decided against a TD6 as they are too slow, so my options and thoughts are:

- 4.4 V8 (up to 2005) -> can get for a great price but dont like the old sat nav and worry the first generation have bugs which were sorted in the later ones. Thoughts?
- 4.4 V8 (2005 and on) -> seems to be about the same price as the SC so wonder why I would not just get the faster one. Thoughts?
- 4.2 SC -> the one Im currently considering, but wonder if I should not go for an older 4.4V8 for less money. Thoughts?
- TDV8 -> More expensive and I do very low miles so wonder if its worth it?

Generally, what are peoples views/experiences on the reliability of the SIII and the different models?

Thanks

The TD6 is significantly improved by Chipping, check out Adam's RR it already has the JE Engineering remap. A chipped TD6 is not far behind a 4.4 petrol. Yes it will beat it in a drag race, but we are talking 1 or two seconds more to 60 not 5 or 10 seconds. In the real world you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

The TD6 is the BMW unit and is more than capable of substantial increases in power - just look what BMW did to the unit in various different models including the X5 which is the same engine and also had power upgrades as standard. Furthermore, you will get on average around 25 mpg and 30 to 35 is possible if you are careful. A 4.4 will average at around 15 to 18 mpg - you can drive a TD6 as hard as you want and still return 23 mpg, including up to well over 3 figure speeds where allowed - trust me we are running 7 Rand Rovers at the moment...

Money no object buy the TDV8 and get it chipped, its faster than a 4.2 supercharged! and returns almost double the mpg

ahhh, my eyes Big Cry

If you can afford to get a TDV8, get one. Failing that, I would probably buck the trend and go for the 4.4 petrol (MY06 onwards). Its only a second slower to 60 than the S/C and 0.5 seconds faster than the TDV8. That being said, it lends itself better to being converted to LPG if you ever feel like the need to. I would imagine the insurance is cheaper on the 4.4 vs the S/C.

Shocked

You don't buy these cars to go fast in. It's 2-and-a-half ton of metal for a start. I don't find mine sluggish and I've had some decent motors over the years. As has been said, it's about arriving in style and luxury. Do 200 miles in one of these and you won't know you've done it. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Do try the TD6 first,as other have said it is a good engine. Have used mine through europe a few times and while its not super fast i dont find it that bad. It has been up to 120 mph a few times with no problem.

The TD6 when remapped or chipped by a reputable company Wink will transform the car.

It will never be the quickest or the quietest but it is a superb workhouse and will outlast the 4.4V8.

After driving round Europe last summer 2009 I was so overwhelmed with the steadfastness of it all, it was like a trusty companion and I sincerely regret selling it today. The TDV8 I have now has A LOT to live up to. Discovery 4 HSE

The prices of 4.2 S/Cs have been moving upwards lately.... has anyone noticed? Wonder if its because of the bad weather?
