Hot Diff and Leaking Diff Breather

When my car was serviced I asked them to double check the front diff, as ever since I had the front driveshafts replaced (as part of the Range Rover Assurance Programme) it had developed a leak -which had subsequently been fixed a few times by the dealer. Evil or Very Mad

Anyway, it appears that small amounts of oil are being forced out of the front diff breather pipe in the engine bay near the oil filter housing. The dealer says the diff must be getting too hot and this is forcing oil out. I'm no expert but I would guess that if the diff cannot breathe (due to a partially blocked/kinked breather pipe) then this would cause overheating and thus forcing oil out the breather pipe.

The dealer wants to 'investigate' with about 5 hours work dismantling the diff altogether to find out why it might be overheating. I think that a quicker and cheaper potential fix would be to replace the breather pipe assembly completely, to see if this fixes the breather issues and then any potential overheating. If it happens again then OK, time to dismantle more stuff, but replacing the pipe can only be an hour's work at most.

Anyone with more knowledge on these things able to advise? Discovery 4 HSE

I saw this on the 'other' forum, need to check mine but wonder if this is my issue?

http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic...er#p237411

"If the leak started immediately after having the front propshaft/diff. updated it might be worth checking that the front diff. breather pipe adapter is orientated correctly (see diagram below). The straight edge should be facing the front of the car. This issue was the subject of a Technical Service Bulletin "Oil leak from front differential breather pipe" dated May 2007. If your adapter is incorrectly orientated then a replacement differential is required as trying to reorientate the breather adapter would result in housing damage."

Jope, not really it seemed to stop. I suspect the breather was the issue, there is an LTB about the positioning of the breather pipe.

Check out the Technical sections ticky pthread about L322 GTR headers, its in there somewhere! Discovery 4 HSE

thanks, have seen it.

Just wondering as we now in Norway have had down to -35 degrees and two FFRR has got leak from the front differential. Hopefully the leak will stop when the weather gets warmer, but was curious if you had found out the problem on yours
