Whats your pre caravan towing check?

Hi Guys I have towed a lot but never in our ff so the first time for me next week !

Tyre pressure what do you set it at?

Does the air suspension lock out at a setting or do you have to press the button to lock it out?

Not got a caravan, but with my trailer, its tyre pressures and nose weight each trip.

Bearings and brakes annually.

I tend to run with the rears 2 PSI up all the time anyway as the RR is mainly used to tow but we do not have much in the RR, if it was full then I would blow them up to the fully loaded pressure.

The suspension 'manual' light will light when you plug the trailer in, assuming you have the towing module fitted, and will lock in normal, it will raise or lower once to get to normal if not at normal.

No obvious indication of trailer flashers working but bulb failure will detect if they are not again assuming towing module fitted.

It is a delight to tow with, we towed over 30,000 miles with our previous petrol FF.

Tyre pressure as per the manual - same on the caravan - reverse the car under the tow hook on the van, connect up, head to the hills - check the mirrors as you pull away to make sure she's following you!

Just general safety i.e when was it last serviced ? Check tyres for flat spots , check lights and general condition maybe if your caravan hasnt been used for a while do all the above and maybe take it out for a short run just to make sure everything feels ok and check wheels for heat incase you have a sticky brake atleast you can get it sorted first rather than find out on the way to your holiday Thumbs Up onto no6 Range Rover

Tyre pressures followed very closely by wheel nut torque particularly on the near side as if a wheel is going to work its way lose then it'll be one on the near side. Next is that all windows are in fully closed position. Then check that the aerial is down & fastened. Turn off caravan gas. Check nose weight with a suitable item. Have you worked out the weight in the caravan? This is a particular problem for people with kids & all the gear they like to take with them, Remember too that the wife loves lots of kit & have a habit of loading in like Noah's ark 2x2 lol. Double check that the tow hitch stabilizer is properly attached, the ALKO ones are very prone to wear & believe it or not lubrication! I hear you cry that the book says to avoid lubricant around the hitch but that’s just pure fantasy. If you view the hitch head from below you will be able to see that the locking mechanism needs a spot of oil from time to time. Keep oil well away from the ferodo part of the hitch & all will be well. The clue to this part not functioning properly is when you hitch up, does the hitch click into place with a resounding click or does it make no noise? If you hear no noise than you are certainly not safe to tow! Don’t say that you haven't been warned. Now put towing mirrors on both sides of the car & adjust them properly. Check that you have not left the motor mover rollers onto the wheels (a common mistake) & that the jockey wheel is fully wound up & tightened. Now with the help of your glamorous assistant
(or the wife will do) check the lights are working correctly. You must do checks like pressing the brake pedal with the indicators working, this will show if you have any earthing faults. If towing at night, please check that your headlight adjustment suits the load on the back of the car, not usually a problem on FFRRs. Do you have enough fuel for the journey? Filling can be a proper pain is the neck in small countryside filing stations.
Are all of the systems off in the caravan apart from the fridge which will happily run on 12volts. Have you upped the tyre pressures on the tow car to the specified levels? Always remember that familiarity breads contempt, most caravan accidents are a result of pure human error. Annually empty the caravan & if you have not used some of the equipment over the last season then you’re unlikely to use it this season either.
Phew it’s a long list but essential. The reason women's minds are cleaner than a mans mind is that women change their minds more often!
