Battery Woes....

I ordered a 110ah Bosch S5 battery from ECP, using the discount code, collected from the store (excellent service),

Could I get it to fit, could i bunters. The bonnet was in access mode, and the battery fitted snugly in the tray. BUT, as the 08 MY has a pyrotechnic charge on the +ve connection there wasnt enough space to fit this down the side of the battery. I had a damn good try at it too, thought better of using a hammer on the explosive part though.

So out it came and it was replaced with an S3 90ah unit from ECP until i can source a better one.

However this seems to have a lot lower CCA rating than the standard LR batt. 720A (EN) vs 950A (SAE) does anyone know the difference in the two rating systems as the LR one seems way higher.

Or am I just being a div and the 110Ah battery would have fitted..... with some fettling. Bow down Bow down Bow down There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have the MY08 with the pyrotechnic charge and, as has been said, it does fit - but only after you have skinned all of your knuckles in the process of pursuading the b****r to go in.

Oh what an interesting life I lead.

I have had an insightful evening of battery research. Rolling Eyes

I have discovered that.

1. Battery Cold crank amps can be calculated in a number of ways SAE, EN, DIN etc
2. SAE DIN and EN give different figures
3. SAE gives the highest figure (gen LR battery quotes 950A SAE)
4. According to a conversion table I found this relates to 900A EN, 535A DIN.
5. Varta seem to make the Genuine LR battery, but its not listed on their site. Jaglanduk.com have it though as a VARTA branded battery, correct size and specs it seems and cheap.

there are very few batteries out there which have the same cold crank rating as the original even if their Ah rating is more, one of the few is the S5 Bosch 110 Ah at about 1000A SAE equivalent.

The battery I have now, the S3, is really too small for the RR as a starter battery.

Im going to have another go with the S5 110Ah, and see if i can make it fit......... Whistle There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Div is a bit harsh but the S5 does fit, eventually, so I will let you decide whether you own personal insult is fair Laughing

Try positioning the battery with the negative side slightly raised on the edge of the tray and tighten the positive cable with the charge before repositioning the battery into place. It does fit........just Thumbs Up

A lot of 'wiggling' is required, but it does fit (just), my positive terminal with the pyrotechnic charge seems a little high on the positive post but it is securely attached, might try Ajay's technique of lifting the negative end up as I have tried pry bars of various lengths in the past...

After a bit of hunting around whilst out and about to see what sort of deal i could get on a Varta battery, i have concluded that with the discount at ECP the S5 Bosch battery is an absolute steal. Over the counter £150 seemed to be the going rate for a 110Ah battery.

I found a Varta dealer who's core business is car batteries and whose walls are lined with Varta stock. He fell off his stool when I told hime the price of the Bosch, and informed me that it was the same battery as the 110Ah Varta he keeps in stock and that he "counldnt buy them in for that". He seemed to think the 720A 90Ah should be ok for the rangie and to stick with it, and that the car is specified with a higher CCA rated battery to take into account extremes of condition that it may encounter. He said he had fitted a few of the 110Ah to FF's but not with the charge pack, and also the 90Ah varta battery as well.

Seemed well informed. Still want the bigger one though, on the basis that bigger is always better, hence why we drive FFRR's Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I still have the 90ah s3 in, but it doesnt like the fbh, after running the fbh for 15 mins it was ever so slightly slow to turn over.

Might have a go and order another 110 from ecp and get out the snap-on pry bar. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you check out ecp, they have an exude 100 amp/hour battery which should just slot in as the battery is the same physical dimensions as the standard Thumbs Up If you really need to go for the 110 amp/hour then these will 'just' fit - I found that a little 'plastic surgery' aided the process considerably Very Happy

If you check out Mick's post here: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic15378.html - I have described my subtle modification, but the bottom line is this - the next time this battery fails I will be getting a standard dimension one as I have had too many silly electronical issues that have stemmed from poor connections on the battery (directly related to getting the positive terminal onto the post Big Cry ) Thumbs Up

I have had a lot of issues with my battery this year. TD6.
Old one died, got a new one from a local shop, the guy consulted his book and said the correct one was a smaller 90 a/h.
This caused me no end of problems, nothing on dash radio/sat nav went German on me etc, etc.
Got a 110 a/h hour from Euro parts and the battery begun to do the same things. I was constantly having to re-set the battery to clear the faults. Also, the negative terminal was slightly too small to fasten the clamp on to proplerly which didn't help. Problems were, no wipers, power steering, fuel gauge, the list went on and it gets worse as the weather got colder.
I guy at a LR indie told me these batteries are just not man enough for the job, could be something to do with the CCA rating.
So after a lot of messing around, i got the correct one from the dealer, job done.........at last.
