Decently priced temp insurance

While the fatty is going to be repaired over the next week or so im looking at getting a temp car.

I can register it to a friend and so fourth so its not mine but a loaner as i wont need it for long before it gets flogged on but the insurance prices are going to be more than im spending on the car!!

IE £3-500 for a months insurance!!

Am i best to just get some Third Party insurance on a pay monthly kind of thing and cancel it once im done with it?

I've asked my insurer if they do temp cover for a loan car from a friend whilst mine is in for repairs and see how much that costs but the cheapest i can find is just learner driver policies which arent bad at something like £80 for a month...

Anyone any experience? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Can you not get a friend to be the registered keeper and you borrow it for a month? Therefore you can drive it on your own 3rd party insurance as it's a borrowed car? Probably fraud, but since the insurance industry are allowed to get away with it ...

Does it?

This has often come up in discussion on the Interwebs - and no-one has a definitive answer. I don't think it does, as it's covered by yours (to road traffic act requirements) while you are in charge of (includes of course when you park it on the road as you are still responsible).

If you're driving a vehicle on your own insurance and the said vehicle 'is owned' by a 3rd party the car must already have its own insurance cover in place

Where does it say that on your policy? It doesn't say that on mine.

I think this is classed as a grey area but someone like Noddy or Trafpol will likely come to confirm my suspicion that the car must have a policy in effect. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I agree -not arguing as I really don't know what the true situation is - but of course it would have a policy in effect covering its use - yours.

Sorry, KP, but what you propose would not stand up to scrutiny . . .

If you were to register the car to a friend, then use it yourself for the purpose you describe, not only do you leave yourself exposed but also your friend . . .

It is correct that for a vehicle to be used under another policy's third party cover, the vehicle does have to have third party cover in it's own right.

To put it bluntly, you cannot afford to try to cut corners on car insurance like this - it's all alot tighter than it used to be. If you were stopped by the police and this were checked, the potential penalties are not worth ie
Loss of car
£200 fine
Six points etc etc

On a positive / practical note, have you considered hiring a car - this could be your best bet, perhaps ?

Sorry to be all doom and gloom, but do it right and you've no nagging doubts -

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Will....i would imagine that your insurer might allow you to transfer your current cover to another vehicle whilst yours is being repaired?? Presumably the repairing companies insurance covers the car whilst in their care...

Of course you want/need insurance on both vehicles....unless you SORN the FFRR

Tesco, Aviva, Churchill, Direct Line, Privilege and Admiral all apparently offer "mirror policies" (where your NCD is also applied to a second car).

NFU have done so for me, but they are slowly becoming more uncompetitive. On the other hand they offer cheap APR monthly policies.

Right phoned Admiral up.

Added the other car for a full month at £36! bargain! And yes the car can be registered to myself or a friend.

So for £306 i have a 306 HDi that i have T&T on for a few months and insurance for a month!!

Utter bargain and off to pick it up now Smile

When im done with it, its going straight back on the bay and off to a new owner and if it pops before then its off to the scrappers Smile

Bangernomics!

Thanks for the offer Nigel Smile May take you up on that as i feel i may be selling the fattie soon.... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
