Windows 8 anyone?

Been having a play with Windows 8 ( W8 ) Consumer Preview today.

Joe90 says:

What a bloody shambles! Lets take Windows 7, remove the the Start Button, then bolt on a smartphone interface, and call it clever! For a desktop computer the new interface has no place or validity

The integration is a joke, you flip from the "Windows 8" desktop to the "normal" desktop as soon as you launch an application (that is worth using!) and the new interface fails to be intuitive from the beginning. If you set up a network share in "desktop" the W8 interface can't find it! Integration with non Microsoft accounts could also be improved.

If you get W8 (for what ever reason), first thing to do is get hold of "Classic Shell" or "ViStart" which give you back a Start button. There is a setting in each of these to take you directly to the desktop, avoiding the "Start Screen". This will be before Microsoft launch an update of their own to provide one!

The revised Windows Explorer is quite good. There is less bloat and things move more quickly than W7 and less strain on the CPU and RAM. Boot times are better and applications load more quickly. Ease of use is likely to be better with a touch screen device, but don't expect increased productivity unless you only use your desktop PC like a phone.

If you use your PC for office work, business or mainstream applications, there is no real operational benefit in upgrading (although you might get a speed increase). I can see the benefit of using the touch screen interface at work on our big screen (52") PCs, but this would take a fair bit of configuration to make it user friendly.

Don't expect a step change, just a bolt on and a speed up. .

Hmmm, well I'm running it for work and it's all a bit mixed TBH.

Like.
Windows key does loads now, and all the old Windows+?? shortcuts still work.
Browser has a kiosk mode
Fast
Power management is good.

Don't like
Same interface on PC/Tablet/Phone. These are different devices.
Touch screen BS. OK with a phone - I can wipe that on my shirt to get rid of fingerprints. Doing the same with a 30" monitor is rather more difficult.
Not overly intuitive.

Think it'll be popular though.

Totally agree. Yet again Microsoft come up with something good and apply it completely wrongly. Windows 8 as it will be released should only be available on mobile devices/tablets where it will work really well. They will lose a lot of business because it doesn't work in a desktop environment and they've not realised they need 2 interfaces to make it work.

I hate Apple with a passion because of the iSheep mentality and their complete aversion to integration, but will always give them credit for understanding their target market and giving them what they want.

100% agree best thing I did 10 years ago.

People that hate macs usually can't afford them or have no idea just how great unix (the o/s mac is based on) is. It's time the PC industry realised that consumers are fed up of buy Censored buy twice.

That iSheep wiki is perhaps the lamest page I've read.
I buy Apple products as they are solid, last longer than most pc's and I've never had any viruses from day one. It's also never crashed despite being used heavily.

RIP Steve Jobs you changed my life. F@@k you Sheep Whistle

Not meant to be an Apple bashing/fanboy or Linux fanboy thread (Linux is my daily OS), just info giving and heads up on what Microsoft have coming.

I have a feeling W8 is going to be another lemon like Win Me and Vista and W9 & W10 are probably already under development! .

Nope, even worse. There are a gazillion good reasons why it's remained at the fringes. it is not now, and probably never will be a true enterprise OS. It works well in "some" server applications, mostly web servers and some database servers.

But the Achilles heel is always the security bit. So secure, because there's not enough functionality for the enterprise. Unable to control centrally in anywhere near the same way as MS or Apple and not enough software houses developing for it, it simply doesn't work in enterprise environments.

Oh, and it's free for a reason. Wink The expression "There's no such thing as a free lunch" is actually true.

"FLAME WAR ALERT" Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

@ mzplcg

It could be argued that linux has not been ready for the desktop until very recently (and the need to apply a slightly different mindset) but

You have obviously not read this:

"free software" (its about freedom!)
http://www.gnu.org/

or this

"linux in the enterprise"
http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-softwa...use-linux#
http://linas.org/linux/
http://codingfreak.blogspot.co.uk/2008/09/...linux.html
http://www.top500.org/ (just click on the links on the left to see the "OS")

now get back in the pen with the other iSheep MS Sheep Twisted Evil .
