@ Joe90, yep I've read all those and w hole heap more in my time. Not really a flame war, but even now it just isn't....well ready.
I would love it to be, and I was one of the developers when we first started the project to bring FreeBSD to the desktop. But even now, how many directory services does it integrate with? Yeah, that's the issue.
Working with offshore resources we tend to use a 80:1 (server to full time employee) ratio for OS support on Windows and mainstream UNIX, whereas we use 35:1 for Linux (all distros). It's just way too hard to integrate it into any kind of central control mechanism. Amazingly though, a lot of our leveraged tooling runs on Linux or Solaris - go figure.
And of course, whether we like it or not (and I don't) every software house on the planet seems to develop for dot-fret and even Visual whatever. It all adds up to dependencies on MS Office with the VBA embedded so trying to use the free office suites is nigh on impossible. All the hype around Ruby on Rails never added up to much.......all very irritating.
Infuriating? Yes. Factual? Sadly, yes.
Win-8? Meh, more mediocrity, but it does integrate easily into the enterprise. As for crApple.....you may recall my original post about that. this was the one which was posted about 1 day before we got a swear filter, can't think why.
