why shouldn't I buy a Range Rover Sport instead?

hi guys,

might start something here Whistle

im currently shopping for a used range rover (Vogue or Vogue SE at first) with a budget of around £25k ish. anyway, i took a td6 out today for a test drive and to be honest although it looked great from the outside - i wasnt over impressed with the drive. now before you gun me down, please bare in mind my current motor is a 3.2 audi tt so completely different to what i drive now. it did feel very solid and can totally see its appeal as a workhorse or powerhouse luxury off roader. but realistically, the most off road i'll be doing is up and down the kerb when i get on the drive. the reason i wanted a vogue (no doubt to many members disgust) is i love the look and luxury of it all. i did have very high expectations of the drive, and although it was nice - thats all it was 'nice' and i was expecting Very Happy Mr. Green I did love the fact i could get baby daisy in and out without breaking my back, and also that the pushchair went in the boot easy as pie (you guys will take this stuff for granted, but coming from a TT coupe trust me its something great).

so...

my needs are:

interior comfort
something slightly more grown up than the TT
smooth/nice ride (on road)
bit more space for the baby
rear seat entertainment
limited budget
low miles + no older than 2005

if the TD6 is too 'workhorse' and rugged for me. Are there any other options in my budget (as the TDV8 seem to be £30k and upwards).

would it be a sin to consider a range rover sport?

opinions (and experience) on the situation would be greatly appreciated

J

With ''low budget'' don't go for it......

Also, wait and try to buy a TDV8. It's acceleration/overtaking performance will not be so noticeable different to your current Posermobile.... Whistle Laughing Laughing

Read through the sister site http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/ and you will see that they seem to have more problems with the Sport than FullFat's .........

United Kingdom 2019 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Santorini Black

I bought a Supercharged RRS when they first came out and had it for nearly 2 years and did over 30,000 miles in it, so I speak from a lot of experience.

Although the engine is superb and it drives better than the FFRR, there are a number of issues with it such as cramped rear space and seating (only suitable for kids) small bootspace, no lower rear tailgate (bumper gets scratched easily) no rear interior lights when you open a door, suspension knocking noises, cheaper materials all round in the interior from the leather on the seats to the carpets. The front seats don't adjust as much and I could never adjust the seat belts high enough to sit over my shoulder (The discovery 4 STILL has this issue)

Bare in mind I had the TOP spec car and I still found these issues. Before the Sport I had an M5 so came from a background of speed, performance and handling.

When I moved to the TD6 there was obviously a clear difference. I had it remappped and it made a big difference to the driveability of the car and easier to live with, but overall I loved the additional roominess inside, the higher class of interior materials and the fact that its just a better car in every way. The audio interface is much better with touch screen interface, you can actually see song indformation for example rather than a simple Disc4 Track 1 readout.

The FFRR is a more prestigious car to own and has more presence on the road. It also requires driving in a different manner to the Sport, but to many of us, that's the point and the reason we love them.

The sport is afterall a Discovery 3 chassis and drivetrain with a different body and interior so its not that special when you boil it down and is sucking at the teet of the Range Rover brand. You definitely pay a premium on the Sport for the badge, the FFRR though has ALL the kit you could want and more.

If you don't think you can live with a TD6, do some saving and get a TDV8, its a different world and in my view the ultimate car (if you're into 4WDs)

RRSports break A LOT Confused

IMHO they should have been called Disco Sport or something - I think the FL2 is closer to a Range Rover than a RRS.

An insult to the Disco I think, Doc! Laughing

I drive the '05 plate 4.4 Vogue facelift with the Jag lump under the bonnet coupled to a the 6 speed box, and to be honest have no complaints whatsoever. Granted fuel economy isn't great (can sit between 20-24 mpg on motorways etc): but you don't buy a Range Rover for fuel economy. Also, she sounds great if you choose to put your foot down!

But then, it all boils down to individual choice. Happy shopping. Thumbs Up

well...

Im even more confused now. took a Supercharged RRS for a test drive today and loved the drive and handling I preferred it so much more than the FFRR TD6 I took out yesterday. Perhaps i've gone from one extreme to the other. I think I may need to drive a Supercharged FFRR and also the diesel RRS before I decide.

I do admit there is something a bit special about the vogue in terms of its overall character (whereas the RRS does just feel like a sporty freelander). But the TD6 I tried yesterday just didnt quite impress me enough to create the desire to go out and buy one (which is an issue, because I know i'll get bored of it if I don't totally love it from day one). I've come to the conclusion that I need something with a bit more punch than the TD6, and also that I dont like the fact the 2006 FFRR has the same interior as a 2002 - it did look and feel a bit dated imo. This is really picky, but the main thing I dont like about the 2002 style interior is the centre console - I prefer the 2007 (and 2010) version where its a nice wider/higher console so that you feel more enclosed (and a thick wall between you and the passenger).

Anyway I think I've cracked it...

I think what I need is a TDV8 or Supercharged on the 2007 style interior. I think im going to have to save my pennies and up my budget because I don't fancy my chances of finding one for £26k. I can't help feeling that if I get the RRS I'll regret it every time I see a FFRR.

Either way I think I need to drive a few more - possibly the TDV8 may not live up to my expectations?!

If you aint happy with the TDV8 then don't bother at all. It's the best FFRR for the UK where the running costs are a factor and it's no slouch. Apparently, a re-mapped TDV8 will beat a supercharged, but I'm happy with it as standard - even though I have a hankering for quick quattros.Mr. Green The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Ive just been doing the sums on the Supercharged (on both counts) and realised JUST how expensive its going to be to run. Even on the relatively low miles I do, the running costs are much more per month than i'd realised. Well at least that solves that problem.

Back to looking at diesels, and the TD6 is a definite no-no so its gonna be a diesel RRS now, or a FFRR TDV8 later Confused

Im gonna drive a TDV8 FFRR and a diesel RRS and see how it goes.
