Day one with Raspberry Pi

I've got it connected into the TV Aux in pins on the FF from the RCA output of the Raspberry. So far so good. Thanks to Navcoder and TV on the move setting, I can see this whenever I want...

I've bought a USB GPS module and got it working (to a point Lord Cropper) so it at least sets the time on the Pi...

Plan is, SATNAV, Mdeia Centre - Music and videos - although using the TV Aux in is only mono, but might be able to work round that using the Parrot 9200i so stereo music and TV video...

Just getting it to boot and appear on the front screen is a start!

Next step is to control it from the front - either by hacking into the canbus (best option but full of traps) or some other way...

Let's see how far I can get with it - I keep thinking of new uses for it - but not sure if it will be powerful enough for any of them! Nice so far though, as all solid state, so no discs to get mangled over bumps. I've got audio and run a stripped down version of XBMC on it - and can see video and hear audio...

Control is the biggy - it's got to be simple to use from the driving seat. And for sat-nav a keyboard of some sort will be needed... I think. Unless I can do it using the car controls and duplicate the current set-up...

Again - not sure whether to install something on the device as satnav, or use google maps and routing with live traffic - would work fine, if there is a phone signal...

Should keep me busy through the long winter months.

I'm now wondering if it will be powerful enough to run windows in a VM... Then I could set up RAC and Navcoder on it too...

The only real way for using the Front Unit controls is to use the resler interface, then you can interact with the ibus (not the canbus) and emulate key presses with the buttons. I used openbm to talk to the ibus. See my ICE thread on here. Have also written my own user interface in bash/yad to handle all this. .

I was hoping you'd be along shortly - the fact I've got this far is thanks to a lot of the info from your thread.

Still early days - Initially just wanted to see if it would work at all - and it does! So that's a start.

I'm looking at the moment to see if there is any sort of touch screen overlay I could hack around to fit... Probably a non starter - but that's only details!

You could use reverse networking with an android phone/tablet that works as a wifi hotspot and connect to the PC that way, this would mean you could use the "XBMC Remote" app to control XBMC on the PI. (Not sure if things have improved and you can connect an android to a PC running its own network yet?). I had the former working well. .

That's a thought, but I'm going to try to make it work as part of the car controls as much as possible.

Doh! I have just realised, because you are using the AV input you are probably out of luck (without some serious hacking and maybe even hardware revisions on the Bord Monitor) because any button presses will be in the AV mode on the bord monitor. You may have better luck with a remote control.... .

Doh!!!

You know, I'd completely missed that.

In which case, plan B. a Bluetooth (or even USB) track ball is favourite at the moment.
