serpentine belt whine

started yesterday, a whine front the front belt area. is not loud. more like a faint high pitched hum in the cabin.
noticable in the cab at about 1000rpm until drowned out by other engine noise.
and there after a faint intermitent whistling on the move.
the temperature seems ok so i presume water pump is fine..
the power steering shows no weakness...
the whine is the same with the aircon on or off
is there a usual suspect eg tensioner that i(i mean specialist) needs to have a look at first?
is it pain to localise( in other words, does it sound expensive)?
done 70000miles.

Could be the tensioner roller, I usually replace that with the belt. That is the "cheapest" problem, could also be any of the other items driven by the belt, A/C compressor, Power steering pump, Water pump, Generator.......

Have a closer listen with the hood open and if you can use a stethoscope (the special car version with the long needle, they are not expensive) onto the bearing locations you should be able to find out which bearing it is.

Good luck. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Use a trigger spray bottle to spray water on the belt, if the noise disappears then the belt is possibly glazed up on the outer edge, if the noise is still there then spray some water on the tensioners to try and pinpoint the noisy one.

DO NOT spray WD40 or any other lubricant on the belt
