Windscreen Manufacturing Defect?

Can only assume a stone was flicked onto the windscreen today which has caused a nasty chip and a crack. However, what I'm really concerned about is that splinters of glass shattered INTO the vehicle. Now, I'm not sure what windscreen regs are but surely glass should never penetrate the vehicle from a chip?

If the stone had sufficient force to crack outer glass and then push onto the laminate interlayer it is possible that it could crack inner layer of glass and then for small shards to come off. It is highly unusual but can happen. Is it original glass or has it been changed?

Thanks Dave, it was pretty scary because glass actually came at me. It is not the original windscreen but the last windscreen was fitted at a LR Dealer and the glass is LR stamped and is therefore laminated. My main question is can I push that this is a manufacturing defect?

All front windscreens are now laminated. Unfortunately I don't think that you'll be able to push it through as a defective screen as these sort of things can happen I have seen swans penetrate the whole screen ending up on passengers lap, not a pretty site. The job of the windscreen when debris is flung up at it is to deflect or if sufficient force absorb the impact. It is not bullet proof (although you can get this option for an extortionate price). Therefore there is a chance that you wil get a small amount of debris in the car. It is far better than the old screens that used to be toughend like your door glass or back screen that would just shatter.
