Insurance increase due to sun protection film!

Due to the arrival of our 4 legged family member, SWMBO is changing her car to a BMW Touring (Estate). We have found nice one but it doesnt have sun protection glass. No problem, we'll get some window film put on the rear to keep the dog out of direct sunlight.

This however is classed as a modification in the eyes of the insurance company and they want an additional £150 per year on the premium!!

Rant over....but beware if you are thinking of putting film on. (and yes, we are honest and we do tell the insurance company) Current MY2020

That happened to me on a Discovery, had the film on 5 years before telling the insurers. Very Happy
When they wanted £150 extra took the film off and sold the car 6 months later.

Just take the film off, and go for the cheaper looking but just as effective black cloth screens.

It actually does not make sense unless they claim cost of repair of the tint in case of damage to the car but even then the increase is out of proportion IMHO. Bastards ! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

We phoned them again and asked if there would be any extra to pay if we installed permanent window blinds and they said....none.

They have explained that having sun protection glass makes the car more desirable to thieves! I thought a secondary consideration for privicy glass is to keep your belongings out of sight, therefore an added security feature....but no!

Got to have it as I cant see my new dog wearing sunglasses.

We've shopped around and they are still the most competitive, but that is just not the point.

Their misguided attitude is obviously if you've got privacy glass, you must have something to hide!

Bit like my premium going up when I switched from the SC to the TDV8 because there are "more claims on the TDV8"! Censored Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

More claims on the TDV8?? WTF is that all about. Surely it's relative to the number of TDV8's on the road vs SC's! Current MY2020

Yip, that was my arguement too!

More of that type = more claims, but had no relevance to my personal circumstances, so they use statistical data which "demonstrates" that more people who have TDV8's make claims, so that'll be an extra £145 if you please!

I did shop around and found that their price wasn't actually that expensive! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

what about if you had pentagon security film fitted, this is classed as a safety feature as it stops the window from shattering and keeps the window in one piece... at also come tinted if you want it.. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.
