Buying your Rangie on your credit card?

Anyone done it? We're currently at the 'trying to find our perfect L322' stage at the moment and can't think of any reason why we shouldn't do this. Obviously, we'd be paying the card off as soon as we got home, but our reasoning is that if anything substantial goes wrong, then we can get some recompense back from our credit card company if the dealer's being an arse. Yes, most places will charge you a 2% premium for paying by credit card, but on £10k of Rangie, that's £200 and something else to haggle on.
What are your thoughts? Good/bad/indifferent?

As long as any part of the transaction is paid by credit card the company are liable for the whole amount. So use the card for a deposit and then pay the rest however you originally wanted.

I can see the logic.. But you might be better trying to get a warranty from the dealer, rather than your car sitting broken for 3 months whilst you argue with garage and credit card company! Previously..

Yeah, I never meant it as an alternative to having a warranty, merely a back-up.
AllseeingPie, yeah, I knew that, but my thinking was that if the full whack was paid on my credit card, my card company would be more likely to pursue a claim than if I'd stuck £500 down and paid the rest with my debit card. Also, £10k or thereabouts would land me an imperial f*ckton of air miles... Laughing

Have a friend who ordered a fully loaded 5series in 1988. Asked for a discount, anything, and was told 'they' don't have to discount the product. Paid by a 'fast american' card - dealer charge 8%, ouch.

Back in the early '80s, I worked in the parts department of a dealership (Jag, BMW, Nissan).
Parts had the only cash register.
Salespuke brought this customer back to pay for the BMW he just purchased, with his Visa card.
Presumably, he paid off the credit card within 30 days.
That, or he was a complete idiot.
Still, the guy was all casual, like he was buying a set of floor mats and not spending $25,000 on a car.

That dealership is now BMW, Jag, Land Rover; looks a bit different now than it did 30-ish years ago. Jim

A bit different, I bought mine on my debit card, saved lugging bagfuls of cash about. .

Here in US, cash transactions over $10,000 must be reported to FedGov.
Maybe its down to $5,000 now; not really an issue for me either way.
If you carry $10K in cash thru an airport, the TSA will confiscate it.

Did mine on debit card too. Though dont think you get the protection a cc would give should things go wrong.

The limits on my cc is kept low by me to prevent swmbo going mad, so not enough space to buy a car. Otherwise if paid off quickly i cant see the problem, and can see the advantages ie points etc. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I reckon you'd need to check your credit card companies smallprint in relation to car purchases in case they have an exclusion clause for them along with other things. I think there's a minimum you would also have to pay to invoke the protection aswell. Most main dealers won't take credit cards (or have a set limit they will take as say a deposit) as they can be stung for hundreds by the POS machine providers for the transaction. I used a debit card which they happily take as it is a much lower percentage. Steve

The credit card company won't exclude cars as their liability is imposed by statute and is non-negotiable. There is a minimum spend, though the OP easily exceeds it here.
