As long as any part of the transaction is paid by credit card the company are liable for the whole amount. So use the card for a deposit and then pay the rest however you originally wanted. |

I can see the logic.. But you might be better trying to get a warranty from the dealer, rather than your car sitting broken for 3 months whilst you argue with garage and credit card company! Previously..

Yeah, I never meant it as an alternative to having a warranty, merely a back-up.

I bought a static caravan on credit cards - 30 grand - once the deal was done, I asked if he cared about payment method - he said no - so credit cards it was - I thought I might as well have the points too |

Have a friend who ordered a fully loaded 5series in 1988. Asked for a discount, anything, and was told 'they' don't have to discount the product. Paid by a 'fast american' card - dealer charge 8%, ouch. |

Back in the early '80s, I worked in the parts department of a dealership (Jag, BMW, Nissan).

A bit different, I bought mine on my debit card, saved lugging bagfuls of cash about. .

Here in US, cash transactions over $10,000 must be reported to FedGov.

Did mine on debit card too. Though dont think you get the protection a cc would give should things go wrong.

I reckon you'd need to check your credit card companies smallprint in relation to car purchases in case they have an exclusion clause for them along with other things. I think there's a minimum you would also have to pay to invoke the protection aswell. Most main dealers won't take credit cards (or have a set limit they will take as say a deposit) as they can be stung for hundreds by the POS machine providers for the transaction. I used a debit card which they happily take as it is a much lower percentage. Steve

The credit card company won't exclude cars as their liability is imposed by statute and is non-negotiable. There is a minimum spend, though the OP easily exceeds it here. |
