Piano Black Gearlever - Not So Sure - Opinions Please

After weeks of waiting, I finally got my piano black gearlever from PowerfulUK and excitedly fitted it.

Now I'm not so sure about whether it looks right. What bothers me the most is the 'silver' trim which isn't as stainless-steel in looks as the original. It's more a metallic light grey. And that bothers me a lot and doesn't look like right to me. It also feels plasticky and less solid than the original which, again, is rather disappointing. I want the lever to feel like something harnessing great power (which the original did, to be fair)and not something I'd associate with a Nissan or other built-to-a-budget car.

What I do like is that it brings together the piano on the sides of the centre console. It follows a theme in a subtle way, which was always the intention. But the detail of the silver centre bit rather spoils the effect.

So, rather disappointedly, I'm having second thoughts on it and would like to ask the FFRR collective on their opinions. Are other options available? Craig...

The picture isn't taken in the best light, I admit. It's not close-up. But it's a view that many will have rather than my up-close inspections.

Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Mr. Green  Si. <This is my name.

Showing off now that you have an SC and posting pictures of your Knob Laughing Laughing

What next your Undercarriage …. Whistle Whistle

Going by the picture it looks okay , but maybe if you took it from the back seats to see how it looks in perspective to your centre console and dash area ….. Whistle Whistle

I agree I think the original is better. I had one with full piano including powerful handbrake (Pre2007) and Gear Knob. They kept catching my eye and just looked like cheapish "Add Ons".

Mick... Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

You're looking at that picture wistfully, aren't you. 400bhp and that gorgeous noise. Go on, admit that it makes you fizz inside.... Laughing

I'm making the most of the picture. It goes back to the dealer for a week tomorrow. Crying or Very sad

Good points, gents. Bow down I accept that all changes need a 'soaking' period but I expected this one to be a no brainer. It's really got me in two minds.

Gary - thanks. You've summed up my thoughts in a nutshell. Thumbs Up

I might have a walk to the carpark and have another look and feel but I really need my old knob here for comparitive purposes... I may even ask my wife later which knob she prefers, but I know her answer won't be 'the one in the driver's seat'. Si. <This is my name.

Bellini, if it's just the silver cover bothering you then swap it with the original from your car Thumbs Up

Take your original in your left hand and press the shifter button. Then insert a flat screwdriver in the cap at the top of the now pressed button and lever the silver cap upwards... It will be stiff and then pop... You may want to try with different sized screwdrivers till you find the best fit... Wink

Pop them both out and then simply swap them both over. You will have to give the cap a fair old wack on the top to get the cap back on! A rubber mallet and some cardboard may help (if you can't hit it hard enough with your hand)...

The painted top will sell well on the bay of fleas to replace a corroded one Thumbs Up

Craig Thumbs Up

Based on the photo I can't say anything. I have been "looking" at this one as well and will hold of now you are ambivalent about it. I do like the original very well. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

It looks a little too 'shiny' IMO, a nice nappa leather one might be better?

Craig, thanks! Bow down

I did attempt that yesterday but didn't try terribly hard just in case it was the wrong way to remove it.

I'll have a more determined effort this afternoon. Thumbs Up

My old lever goes back to Powerful on an exchange basis.

A LR work colleague and D4 owner told me earlier, when I was sitting inside the S/C after Mick's post and taking pictures like a mad thing, to 'just put the damned leather one back on!' Si. <This is my name.

Hi

Simply swap the trims then, just pry them out using a plastic trim tool, (like a large screw driver, but made of plastic so it does not scuff anything).

Put the tool at the bottom of the trim and lift it up slowly. It is snapped on tightly, but dare and you'll win.

Back to your original point, I really think the Autobiography one looks better than any - this is the soft, smooth, Napa leather with the piano black trim.

My only grievance about it is you loose the Range Rover logo on it.

An ideal one would be this one with metal Range Rover letters within the piano black (in a similar fashion they did insert metal "Autobiography" metal logos on the 2009-on piano black door trim.) Thumbs Up l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l
