Stuck in Lo Ratio

Hi Folks

This evening I was in a soft bog (literally) and engaged the lo ratio setting on the gerabox. Drove fine untilI got back to the main road and it wouldn't re-engage the high ratio. Tried turning it off and on again, also tried to rest it with vehicle stationary and foot on pedal brake, agin no joy. Lucklily I was only 3 miles from home and managed to make it that far. Anyone any ideas what the problem might be and how I might resolve it? Its a 2005 RR TD6. Thanks Ed 0-60 takes 5 and a half seconds...and about 17 gallons of fuel....

Possible it is transmission wind up, but not sure L322 can suffer that. If it is, reverse it a bit, then try again - OR, carefully lift a corner on a jack ....

Otherwise the motor may have failed, or the linkage is gummed up - worth getting under it and spraying some lubricant at it. Land Rover Addict

Have you tried disengaging without the brakes applied, car sitting horizontal and in neutral ?? The brakes can give you an issue maybe putting just a bit of extra "lock" on the gears. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Agree - also try neutral, no brakes. Or - do what I do - low to high on the move, get up to about 10 mph, neutral, re-engage. There is no need to stop to switch, up to ... gulp ... 60mph! *or* find a hill and roll down Very Happy Land Rover Addict

You should be able to hear/feel the motor engage/ disengage... Can you hear it trying to change? It does sound like it could have seized.. Lubrication required me thinks.. Previously..

Thanks Folks, got it, used the lo to hi method on the move, took a few attempts, had to push the swich pretty hard before I got the reassuring "bong", wondering if the switch it self might be little dodgy. Anyway, take the point on lubrication, will throw it in the air over the weekend and have a look. Where abouts underaneath should I attack with WD40, is it somewhere in the region of the gearbox? Thanks again, great supportive bunch on here. Regards ED 0-60 takes 5 and a half seconds...and about 17 gallons of fuel....

Use penetrating oil, not WD40 Smile Land Rover Addict

Not quite sure what you are going to lubricate?

The transfer box motor is sealed and fixed onto the back of the transfer case. The transfer shaft is inside the gearbox.

See cool video made by RRPhil:

Did you get any error messages on the dash? If not, maybe a dodgy switch. This is easy to get at if you lift the centre tray around the gearstick.

When you have time, and may not need the car ( Shocked ) suggest you run it from high to low a few times to see if it a) does it again, b) gives you an indication of what the problem is.

Not that it will help, but if I go to low range, I can't get back to high, and get TRANS FAILSAFE up on the dash. Have to wind the gearbox back to high with an old motor!! .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

No error messages came up, when it got "stuck" in lo ratio. I also have a Hawkeye and though I know its limitations it showed no errors. Will have a look at the switch over the weekend when I don't need the car. 0-60 takes 5 and a half seconds...and about 17 gallons of fuel....
