I would start with the socket.

Get a test lamp or a meter and check between the following pins and the chassis. Pin 7 L.H. Side lamp, Pin 5 R.H. Side lamp. Both should light the test lamp or show 12v on meter between the pin and the chassis. If they show live then do the same but this time instead of the chassis connection, connect to pin 3. Pin numbers are correct for both 7 pin and 13pin trailer sockets and of course you need the side lights on when testing. BMW i3 Electric Car
