L322 2011 Towbar electrics

Hi,

Having changed the gearbox oil & rustproofed both rear wheel arches & applied the additional wheel arch rubber protectors my only outstanding job is the electrics on the towbar. Everything works except the caravan left & right side lights, could it be the Trailer control module? Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Dave.

Dave

Might be teaching granny, but before you chuck yourself at the module, have you checked the wiring for power and/or breaks, the car socket/s for corroded or failed connections and the 'van lights and wiring themselves with a 12v power from a battery? Cheers
Richard

I would start with the socket.

Have you got 13 pin or 7? The wiring on the 2011 hasn’t got the fag packet like the older cars, it’s a straight plug in job. So you would be into the cars electrics if it’s not the socket.....

I would start with checking the power at the pins to rule out bad connection or bad earth. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Get a test lamp or a meter and check between the following pins and the chassis. Pin 7 L.H. Side lamp, Pin 5 R.H. Side lamp. Both should light the test lamp or show 12v on meter between the pin and the chassis. If they show live then do the same but this time instead of the chassis connection, connect to pin 3. Pin numbers are correct for both 7 pin and 13pin trailer sockets and of course you need the side lights on when testing. BMW i3 Electric Car

Thanks all,

Its a 7 pin socket, are we saying there is no trailer control module on this year?

I will probe about when it stops raining & report back.

Dave.

Hi,

Today the sun shined so I was able to meter the pins & discovered that the 2 brown wires on the plug should have 12 volts with the side sidelights on but did not. Can anyone advise where these wires next go so I can trace them back without unravelling the loom protection?

Thanks
Dave.

Many thanks for the PM, exactly what I need. How can I physically find the location of trailer ECU D221? Is there a component map?

Thanks

Dave.

Hi,

Pleased to say that I have resolved my problem, it was a fuse in the passenger fuse block, thanks for all your help.

Dave.
