What will a £10k D3 be like?

Friend of mine (no really, I'm confirmed as Fully Fat!) has decided he "needs" a "Land Rover". What he actually means is he needs something to tow his wife's horse box (apparently 2.1t loaded) but he probably also needs to fit in with the "county set" if truth be told Rolling Eyes

Anyway, his criteria for his "Land Rover" (I'm using the term in quotes as it seems from discussion that he means something with a green oval, rather than anything specific) are that it must be diesel, must be manual, and must tow the nag. He has also said that he "might" want to drive to Switzerland in it. Budget is £10k max.

If he's going to drive to CH, then the D3 is the only realistic option IMO. A Defender would just be too much of a neck to drive down there a couple of times each winter.

There are D3s out there advertised at £10k-ish, but what are they going to be like if he goes to look at one? Will they be any good, or a complete shed at that price?

I think that his only other options are:

- a "old/cheap" 110 and a second car which will cover distances
- a late, tidy D2, or
- forget Solihull and go for something like a Shogun/Trooper - but the Hunters won't match!

Point him at the sister site disco3.co.uk. Very active forum.

A well looked after D3 for 10K (especially if he picks a lower spec newer one, instead of a high spec older one) should be fine. Graham

Hi Cappo,

If he is local, get him to pop over & take a look at mine - 54 plate manual TDV6 S.

I could be tempted to part with it Whistle but would then have to buy another for the Mrs as there is no better family/holiday car IMHO!

We have taken it skiing to Austria, Switzerland & will be off to S France this summer - already bought the roofbox!

Hi Ivor, yes, he's in Hadlow, so quite close. I'll ask him and PM you, lost my phone at the weekend and I'm not sure whether I still have your number or not!

Or find an extra £2k and get a good "S" if you buy private and have it checked over. £10k is a little low for a good one IMHO.

Absolutely. Good, late D2's are fetching more than 10k in all honesty. You "CAN" find a D3 under 10k in the same way as you "CAN" have a vasectomy without anaethetic. Probably wouldn't want to though.

For 10k you can expect a base spec (coil sprung, 5 seat) nail which has done more miles than the Starship Enterprise. Anything better than that starts at about 12k. Expect to pay 15-18 for a decent SE with sub 100k on the clock. Manual box keeps prices down a bit, but not much.

Also, get any prospective purchase appraised by a decent mechanic. Stuff like faulty park brakes, ERB bushes, etc all add up to thousands, not hundreds. Oh, and be aware of the big belt service at 105k or 7 years. It's really easy to buy a D3 which needs 3 or 4 grand spending on it.

Maybe get a basic FL2 for that price as just within tow cap for it TBH.

more economical, smaller for about town stuff and generaly cheaper to maintain as well Smile

Sturdy things but air suspension can be a problem if you load it up internally on a regular basis.. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Thanks again guys, mz, that's properly useful detail. I really did think he was pushing his luck at that money.

KP - I said to him that I thought the FL would struggle towing that sort of weight?? Neither him nor his wife are experienced towists either!
