Yet another A8 post!

Guys,

Since I'm having to downsize from my Range Rover, I'm looking for a nice car up to £10k, which will give me a combination of reasonable performance, economy, and consummate luxury. I'm beginning to think the A8 may be the solution.

I'd like to spend as little as possible, and I could get a 2003 4.0 tdi, with 81k and full history for around £6k, or I could spend a little more and get a more recent car, but with higher mileage.

Is there anything to look out for on these cars? Is the 4.0 much better than the 3.0? Anybody every had one remapped? Any advice on standard spec/ desirable options?

Thanks,

David Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Make sure the belts have been done before you buy as they are a front end off job IIrc so best part of £800+

And just make sure everything works on it as well Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I'm having second thought about the A8. Got a quote for warranty, £1,300 per year! range Rover and 7 series come in at £600 less! Is the A8 unreliable or just extremely expensive when it does go wrong? Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Not daft at all, I'm very tempted, though I'm quite tempted by your old car too, a 2007 535d, would you recommend?

I seem to recall reading that the XJ was renowned for reliability, quite interesting that Jaguar Land Rover could get it so right on one model, whilst being at the bottom of the rankings on the FFRR, with pretty much the same engines and gearboxes etc!

I quite fancy the A8 just to have a quattro, I've been offered an S320 cdi in part exchange, which would be OK, but I'm thinking the S class is going to be more of a barge than the A8 or 7 series.

The xj is a wild car, and looks a little dated, but apparently drives great, and has a certain je ne sait quoi! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

If you think the XJ is good make time and find a 2.7litre TDV6 Citroen C6, very under rated and cheap cars once depreciation hits them.

5 series is good but there are loads about. The 535d was fast but the ride was harsh and it wasnt without its minor technical niggles, nothing terminal on mine, but like any complicated car there are horror stories.

I would recomend it though there are a few things to look out for. There is plenty of info on the 5 series forums to look at before looking. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I am thinking of changing from RR to Audi a6 3.0tdi quattro. I need the boot space of the estate otherwise the A8 or Phaeton are very nice.

I don't fancy the Chrysler Stan, thought about it, but not for me.

The Citroen looks impressive, but I'm not keen on French cars.

Favourites at the moment are A8, XJ, and 7 Series, though I may end up with an S class as a px. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Just give it a try, parts arent too bad, they are quite rare on the roads and they ride extremely better than the others Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

300 C

I'm so glad you don't like the 300C, I hope I don't offend anyone but we just got rid of one, it was my fiancee's. We had nothing but trouble from a 57 plate car with only 40k miles. It was fully dealer serviced too.
3 sets of alloys under warranty due to corrosion, numerous suspension component replacements, diesel leak X2, Brake dust guard corroded through the bolts and fell off. The list goes on and on, these are a truly awful car to own and maintain IMO.
Had it, loved it!
