Fuel Gauge Lying?

With my fuel gauge on the line and yellow warning light on, range left @ 20 miles, I can only get @ 80 - 85 litres into the car. I have had no change in mpg but only get @ 425 miles out of a tank (was easily getting over 500).

Anyone else got a similar problem? Or suggest a fix?

Tempted to buy 5 litres of diesel in a can and just drive until I run out of diesel, but I understand this is not a good idea? Would be interesting to see what the range computer does once I get past "0" Smile

I pretty much always go past zero range as fill totally each time - about once a week at about 100 litres - and it just stays at zero range. Obviously if run to completely empty people worry about the crud being sucked up from the fuel tank but have never got this far.
What always irritates me a bit is how the range just doesnt agree with the mpg towards the end of a tank full but I guess thats just a function of the calculations being done in the computer. Hey ho

the most i've ever put in with a range of '0' is 95 Litres Joe.

I'm guessing its part of a fail safe to help protect the intank low pressure pump as its known on a fair few vehicles when they run out they either overheat or get blocked with all the gunge in the tank if the system hasn't been flushed with some kind of cleaner it can be quite bad....

Take the risk Joe and when it starts to chug just pull over asap and stick your jerry can worth in. It should at least get you another 20miles Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

same as you joe , i can never get more than 80 odd litres in mine even when i've run with the yellow light on..

i reckon the extra fuel is hiding in the tank and pipework..kinda thing LR might do so you dont see a fullfat which has run out of fuel on the side of the road ,... ... - .- -.

So does range just stay at 0 when it gets there? .

I have a similar problem but the opposite way.. When I fill her up, the gauge goes to full, but doesn't budge for ages after good but of driving and then all of a sudden it moves down. Weird..

When I fill up the gauge initially goes all the way over to full, then drops back @ 1/6th. Maybe worth trying to fill up again immediately to see if there is an airlock or summat silly like that? .

Joe, the rise and fall after fuelling may be due to the diesel frothing up in the tank. When refuelling, try pumping the last 1/3rd of a a tank slowly, to prevent the fuel churning in the tank.

At work, our trucks do this all the time.
