Yes - I've replaced the alternator. Before you start ... have you looked at the price of them?

Its a case of removing all ancillary stuff off the front of the engine, unbolting the unit and sliding it out, then sliding the new one back in.

Technically not a difficult task ... just a pain in the ar5e to have to do it all. ( Why they couldn't have a bolt on the side alternator like every other car out there I dont know .... I do wonder if BMW try to design over complexity into things sometimes )

At 17.5V ... sounds like your regulator has gone kaput, and possibly the diodes.

You're not going to like this next bit ...

I think I just threw a brand new regulator for the alternator out last week .... I still have my old alternator sitting on the work bench. I was considering replacing the regulator and the diodes on it to fix it, but I had a hard time trying to find the right diodes. I think with a bit more effort I probably could find them.... but if the regulator has gone ... doh! V8 or else ...

I don't remember taking mine out. I ca take the fan and cowl off without removing the rad....

You may as well replace the water pump when you are in there as well, as it's a known failure item. V8 or else ...

Ray ...

As for the fan, you need a tool or bodge that holds the pulley whilst you turn the centre nut.

I made one out of a large piece of flat bar. It has to grab over one or two of the 4 pulley bolts a s they are the only part of the pulley that protrudes that you can get a grip or hold of to stop it turning.

Once off, ( remember, it's an opposite thread for the fan nut ). I puit back on pretty lightly. Just a gentle nip tight. That makes it very easy to get off later... I don't think I needed my pulley tool the last time to undo the pulley nut, the tension of the belt was enought to hold the pulley. V8 or else ...

Thanks for all the advice guys .....all sorted now anyway I did end up sliding the rad out and just removing the tensioner
It's not that bad a job once you figure out what's got to come out just a bit of a knuckle scraper and very costly but at least it's done now Thumbs Up "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

I may be wrong, but as I understand, Bosch doesn't actually make these alternators any longer, but they do completely refurbish the returned cores and resell them.

There are aftermarket ones that are new.
The Bosch factory rebuild that I bought was about $325 US if I remember right.
And they truely do look brand new. 03 HSE Range Rover (U.S. Spec)
