For basic troubleshooting, try turning it on manually from the home screen in the car - that will help narrow it down to whether the FBH is working, then you can start worrying about the remote.

I've always worked on 6 miles to recharge a cold start, but in reality, it's a length of string thing. Dont think it will be much less than that though.
