There is no technical reason why jump starting is bad for your car.

If you are jump starting from a battery pack, you are simply 'replacing' your flat battery with a charged battery - i.e. a like for like change.

If you are jump starting from another vehicle with the engine running, you are simply feeding the power from their battery/alternator combination in place of yours, again a like for like change.

Paul, there are jump leads of all different qualities on the market... Some work well, and some do not... Some cars have a strong current, some don't... Would you jump start a TDV8 from flat using a 20yr old Austin Mini and a £2.99 set of jumper cables? No! You will send all sorts of voltages to your Ecu's...

Try changing the power supply to your home PC. Go and unplug it several times without turning it off...

All I am trying to do is set a general president... Ask Land Rover technical if they would advise you jump start a FF! Bet you they don't!!!!!

I'm not arguing, I am simply pointing out that your statements (in this 'Technical' section of the site) do not stand up to technical scrutiny. I don't know what LR technical say, but if they suggest that jump starting can damage your ECUs, they are incorrect. My suspicion is that they are covering themselves againt all eventualities, including someone jump starting from a 24v vehicle !

Could it be that rather than jump starting being the cause of ECU failures that you see, it is in fact a faulty ECU that is causing the battery drain in the first place?

i would stay on the side of caution especially how delicate the fullfat is with regards of electrical problems and the fact that of the cost of replacing an item if it fries...
if you stick to mine and craigs suggestions on how to jump a fullfat then you will be ok.. ... - .- -.
