Europe In or Out?

If/When there was a referendum on staying in Europe how would you vote?

People seem to think that by leaving the EU we would no longer be able to trade with the EU. The rest of the word trades successfully with the EU without being screwed over the price of things as we are with both buying and selling.

Leaving would be the best thing for our country, we would then be free to sell to other markets - as we are currently partially prohibited from doing.

We could also control our own damned sea's and decide what fish to take out of where!

Personally I think being in the EU is worthless to the UK - we pay huge membership fees in which we recieve little benefit, much of what we do already can also be done without being in the EU.

OUT...

This country has more than enough problems that need resolving before stepping in and contributing billions of pounds to other countries such as Greece, Italy etc who cannot control their own economy (not that we are any better)

I cannot think of any long term benefit this country would gain by considering staying within the EU...

...from what little I understand fishing and farming in GB has already suffered in recent years because of the restrictions imposed by the European Union bureaucrats.

Unfortunately for us who dont have the mighty resources of the UK we have to stay in. Reason Ireland is in trouble is because our Goverment and the EU say we cant burn the bondholders . Those Bondholders are German and French Banks who bought into Ireland during the boom by investing in Irish banks and now its gone pear shaped rather than taking a hit its us the tax payer have to take the pain whilst they recoup all or most of any losses. We have been let down badly by the EU because of this but like I say we have no choice but to stay in as its them thats keeping money in our ATMs and banks without them we would be totally fecked. Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

OUT and put the money saved back into the NHS or the pensions of public sector workers and finally get it sorted! Smile

I voted IN only for the SME businesses. Not being in Europe has the potential to make our exports uncompetitive as EU members could impose tariffs. I also think that until the UK invests more in manufacturing and R&D and exports more to BRIC, then we are still going to need be a member of the EU.

Just my 2p.

Has anyone noticed that the BBC is very pro-Europe? May be it is just me? Paul

I'm one of the many who like the idea of a single currency (ease of travelling in europe without constantly changing currency) but see very little benefit of being part of it and certainly don't want to have anymore EU rulings controlling what we do in the UK. Single monetary policy across vastly different cultures and countries is fundamentally flawed - nice idea, doesn't work very well in practise. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

The trouble is that the question is more nuanced.

I think we should aim for a relationship akin to the one that Switzerland has - free trade and perhaps some common standards.

Whether that would count as "out" or not, I'm not sure.

As my clients are based in Geneva and I spend a good amount of time working in Switzerland I wholeheartedly agree. But we should also join the Shengen as well as I have almost missed connecting flights by having to deal with immigration and security coming back to the UK.
